Report Twitter trolls with abuse button

You may remember I mentioned in one of my previouse posts that feminist freelance journalist Caroline Criado-Perez was subjected to repeated rape threats on Twitter. Well I’ve just received an email from Kim Graham via , who after hearing about Criado-Perez’s treatment on Twitter launched a successful campaign for Twitter to create a ‘Report Abuse’ button. Hurrah! About time! Read the full story here.

NYR White Tea Facial Mist & Organic Facial Wipes

As promised here is a review of some of the other things in my NYR goodie bag that I’ve been using for around a month.

White Tea Facial Mist

I have sensitive skin which reacts to certain foods, alcohol and the urban environment so I couldn’t wait to start using this. It lessened a lot of the redness and balanced the oils in my skin, so I’m a total convert to the calming antioxidant properties of white tea! It’s also 92% organic which is good for my skin and the environment. It’s been so cooling and refreshing during the the hot weather recently. I’ve also noticed that when I’ve got a full face of long wear foundation layered over mattyfying serum, if I spray this over my face, it stops my makeup sliding off. Rating 4/5

Organic Facial Wipes

NYR Organic Facial Wipes are 98% organic and Soil Association approved. They are hands down the best facial wipes I have ever used! I had them open for around a month and they retained their moisture the whole time. I know this is a beauty no-no but during the summer months, when my make up is lighter, I get lazy and remove it with wipes. The antioxidant white tea and aloe vera did an amazing job at cleansing and calming my face. To be honest, they have been making the whole cleanse, tone and moisturise routine rather redundant!

Manchester Street View: Part 2

Here are some photographs I shot recently in Manchester, as and when I spotted something interesting. I always use a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 (one of the best ‘point and shoot’s’ on the market) and that’s as technical as I get. Let me know what you think – I’m always up for suggestions (or compliments) regarding composition, lighting, perspective… And now I’ve run out of technical terms. I hope you enjoy your tour of Manchester :0)

Room 101

I’ve been tagged by mum of Z and into writing one of these posts. I agreed as it’s your own list of annoying things you wish you could banish into a fictional room of no return. Dun dun duh!

Neighbours playing really loud music

Ok if it’s your fave song and you want to blast it out for a while, then great. If you are having one of those infrequent house party’s, then that’s fine. I’d even like an invite! But if you are playing rap music so loudly that is sounds like it’s coming from the same room I’m in and if you are ‘singing’ along to it as a group at an ever increasing volume at three in the morning, then hell no! No, no no! But if you want to throw some Ja Rule, 2Pac, Biggie and DMX in there, I might forgive you.

These are a type of people that speak in an accent all of their own, no matter where they come from. The way they call each other over is by saying “EEh ya yo!”. The way they disagree with something is by saying “Naah, man, naah.” To confirm you know what they mean they constantly repeat “No wa a mean, yeah?” a lot. When they make a statement they often finish it with “Innit.” Meaning: Isn’t it a fact, that I have made a good point, don’t you agree?” They often walk around plastered in ‘designer’ (mainly sports designer) clothes, looking like walking billboards. They will have paid a large some of money for this privilege. Oh yes, the bigger the jewellery the better. Even though they have some how managed to acquire the latest smart phone, they delight in having a shouty conversation with their mate who’s at the opposite end of the street. Lots of scally’s are proud to be a ‘baby Daddy’ to some one with a name like Staci, Shantal or Britny. Their kids are often called Wayne, Mercedes or Kyle pronounced ‘Ki – uw’. Often affectionately referred to as “You li’l sh!t”

Electronics that don’t make your life simpler

This is what I think a great gadget should do basically. If however, it keeps crashing, has to be turned on in a certain Crystal Maze type of sequence or requires a hundred expensive extra parts to make it worth while, it’s incredibly annoying! If I have to pay someone to give me extra customer service support, for the next 6 months, to help me figure out the bloody thing, then it’s hardly ‘user intuitive’.

The bloke doing an impression of me when I protest

I sound like this “But I did clean the counter after I made my sandwich”

He tells me I sound like this “Bub bub bub bi bub bub bub!”

It drives me nuts, not because he’s taking the mickey, not because he’s ignoring my protest but because he’s got it spot on! I know I do sound like that, so it makes me laugh. Damn it!

Telephone customer service

I don’t want to speak to someone in an Indian call centre who’s accent is so strong we have no hope of understanding each other. I don’t want to be transferred around all the departments in a company, only to be given a new number to dial which turns out to be original department again. I don’t want to create a dodgy techno track by punching in my personal details with my touch tone phone, because if I make one mistake I’ll have to start all over again!

Well that was fun!

I’m tagging the list below (who are all from the North West) to see if they want to join in and have a moan.

My Five Favourite Things

So I’ve been inspired by the #bloggirls twitter tag to put this post together. I’ve not used a linky before so this is going to be interesting!

1 My loved ones

I’m rubbish at being on my own for more than 2 days, so I really appreciate that my parents are still around. Even though they are in another country essentially , it’s only a few hours on the motorway or by train. I love them to bits and we have a right laugh, even though they drive me mad on a daily basis when I’m with them! My boyfriend (I feel too old to use that term now I’m in my 30’s, I could change it to partner but having said that, some people assume I’m gay) … My bloke is my best mate. Even if I had a ton of mates I still think that statement would be true. I love him to bits and we have a right laugh, even though he drives me mad… I’m sensing a pattern here.

3 Beer & Pizza

I know that’s two things but they go together perfectly like curry & rice. Me and the bloke make amazing pizza for each other. We eat half and leave the other half to go cold, put it in the fridge and eat it the next day for breakfast. I’m telling you those Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were really on to something.

2 Sunshine

I’m olive skinned and quite mard, if there is a slight chill in the air I’ll be wearing a cardy so I don’t get any where near as much vit D as I should. Sunshine lifts my mood and makes me feel so upbeat and happy!

4 My blog

It keeps me company when I’m alone. It gives me a chance to chat to people about the nuances of loving makeup and style and random weird things. It gives me an outlet to express myself. I like saying “I’m a blogger” rather than “I’m on the dole”. Is that pretentious? I’m also that annoying person the group has to wait for while I get just the right angle, light and composition for a photo. If I go somewhere and leave my camera at home I’m there thinking ‘damn that would’ve made a great shot’. On a recent ‘camera free’ day I spotted a pair of massive Shags (like a Cormorant) chilling out in my local park! No more ‘camera free’ days for me.

5 Buying Clothes

I’m a buying ninja. I can do a quick walk-about a shop surveying it for the exact item I’m looking for, then be out in under a minute. I love tracking down the item that I’ve had in my head for months (on the high street), it gives me a total buzz! I’ve taken friends shopping that don’t like it and they have been amazed at how efficient I’ve been. I don’t look like Gok Wan in a wig for nothing, you know. This of course leaves plenty of time for a blended ice based coffee with cream after. I won’t say the Frap.. word as I’m boycotting Starbucks for tax dodging and generally taking over Britain.

Manchester Street-art Part 2

Here is a compilation of street art I’ve come across recently and I have to say the folks in Manchester have got pretty creative this summer!

Tiny staircase in wall & me

Tiny staircase in wall close up

Turns out that ‘Mr Smith’ dreamed of a tiny but well lit staircase in the middle of a wall!

Neon footwear street-art

A nice bit of ‘yarn bombing’ surrounding him but I have no idea what he’s wearing on his head.

Street-art by Alice

I’ve seen more work by Alice Pasquini but I can’t remember where and it’s bugging me. Let me know if you know.

I have a massive backlog of street-art to blog about so it’s going to become a regular feature. I’ve made a promise to myself to keep on top of it from now on, as it can disappear pretty quickly!

NYR Wild Rose Beauty Barm

It’s been just over a month since I attended the Neal’s Yard Remedies bloggers event and received Wild Rose Beauty Balm in my goodie bag (along with other things I will shortly be reviewing), so I’ve had time to see the effects.

Wild Rose Beauty Balm £37 for 50g

It’s a multi use product that cleanses skin, gently exfoliates it if you use the cloth provided and of course moisturises. It has quite a solid consistency but soon melts on contact with the skin. It also has the most heavenly rose scent that lasts for hours. I love how NYR display exactly how organic each of there products are on the label and I was pleased to see that this one is 99%. My face is usually oily to combination and needs an exfoliator which includes grains and a lot less oil. However, it has been incredibly effective for me in two ways:

  • When combined with the cloth, I use it to remove my old patchy fake tan from around my jaw line, neck and body. It’s more efficient at this than any other product I’ve tried.
  • Like most women my age I have cellulite and some mild stretch marks. Every day after I’ve had a shower, while my skin is still damp, I massage a little bit into my skin. It’s had such an amazing effect at moisturising and evening out the look and feel of my skin, I think it’s amazing! I read on the NYR FB page that one women likes to add some to her bath – brilliant idea!

As I said, I’ve been using this every day for just over a month and it’s so effective, I’ve only made a tiny dent. I love it so much, I’ll definitely be replacing this product when it runs out – in a year or so!

I’ve been nominated for The Liebster Award -hurray!

I’d like to say a big thank you to Alia at Au Naturel Essence for nominating me! I’m glad I got this one as it’s for blogs with under 200 followers and it happens to mark an occasion: I’ve recently just passed the 100 follower mark!

Liebester award

The Rules

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to their blog: Post 11 facts about yourself, answer the 11 questions asked of you, and create 11 new questions for the bloggers you nominate.
  2. Nominate 11 blogs you think deserve to be noticed, and leave comments for them letting them know that they’ve been chosen.
  3. Display the Liebster Award logo.
  4. No tag-backs.

I’m really struggling at the moment to find blogs I’m certain have under 200 followers and/or haven’t already got the award! So please, if I follow your blog and you are eligible (or if you know someone who’s getting a bit disheartened, who you think deserves it instead) please could you drop me an email or leave a comment under this post. I will gladly nominate you, with a link to your blog in this post. I know this is not the conventional way but then, I never have been very conventional! I won’t display the award on my blogs side bar until I’ve nominated other blogs and asked them a list of (hopefully fun and interesting) questions.

11 Facts about me
1. I have weak hand domination, which basically means I use both hands equally to do different tasks so I’m neither left or right handed.

2. I was born with blue eyes which quickly turned to a lime green colour and they are now starting to get lots amber colour in them. Weird but cool.

3. When I reach my 60’s I hope I shall wear my long silver hair in a platt and have a tribe of cats.

4. I have no tatts but want one of a baby dragon climbing up my arm.

5. I have a food intolerance to wheat & dairy. Yoghurt is my kriptonite.

6. I way just over 10 stone and I’m happy with that.

7. I’m so crap at walking in heels that one day I got asked by a police officer if I’d been drinking as I was wobbling so much.

8. I used to be able to drink a bottle of wine before going on a night out and then beer and a few shots of absinthe and still walk straight. Now I settle for 2 cans and I’m happy.

9. I can dance well to pretty much any style of music – within reason!

10. I have a major history of cancer on both sides of my family, so wish me luck!

11. I’m vegetarian and the first red meat I tried at age 12 was a McDonalds burger which I swiftly threw up.

My answers to Alia’s ace questions

1. What is your favorite colour?

Any shade of blue including turquoise and teal.

2. What was your scariest moment?

Finding myself in a sea kayak with waves coming at me side on about to flip me over at any moment, wondering what the hell was I thinking when I signed up to do it!

3. What was your happiest moment?

This is totally mushy but I have to say, I have never felt happier than when I’m snuggled up to my bloke on his couch, under blankets, listening to the rain outside.

4. What do you do to relax?

Drink a couple of beers, eat my fave take-away (veg and tofu satay with egg fried rice) and watch girly sitcoms by myself.

5. What book would recommend?

Sugar by Bernice McFaden. It’s about a young black women who has led a tough life after being abandoned by her mother into a brothel, who’s trying to make a better life for herself.

6. What inspires you to continue blogging?

I met a really cool bloke years ago who set up a (now defunct) blog for me and told me I should write. I tried it and I got a great response to my first post. Readers comments and ‘likes’ are still the main reason I love blogging! I must have a deep need for acceptance or something, hahaa!

7. What is your dream vacation?

Hawaii. I am determined I will go there alone one day, as it’s kind of become my own personal mecca.

8. Who do you admire the most?

My Dad, he always seems to just be able to hold it together no matter what is going on around him. I’ve never seen him cry but at the same time he’s still emotional. He;s been a great support to my Mum as well.

9. What is the most effective way you’ve found to promote your blog?

Twitter and blogger forums on Face Book (Northwest Bloggers, GiG and FBL Bloggers) Also just taking the time to comment on other people’s blogs and joining conversations in regular forums which creates an actual community.

10. What is your profession?

I’m professionally unemployed.

11. If you had just one day left to live, how would you spend it?

With my family in Hawaii (this has been a very pre-empted day apparently) going joint paragliding with my boyfriend.!
