Here are some photographs I shot recently in Manchester, as and when I spotted something interesting. I always use a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 (one of the best ‘point and shoot’s’ on the market) and that’s as technical as I get. Let me know what you think – I’m always up for suggestions (or compliments) regarding composition, lighting, perspective… And now I’ve run out of technical terms. I barley recognise it from back then (I was 14) either. There are so many new big glass buildings and a chunk has been catchily renamed ‘The Northern Quarter’ where all the old buildings have been given a new quirky-cool lease of life. I’m so glad the creepy old sunken Piccadilly ‘Gardens’ has been transformed with lawns a floor of fountains! :0D

Not so much a comment on the photos themselves, as on the collection: I love the contrast between the ultra-modern architecture and the old historic buildings. Now if you could combine the two in a single shot… You almost have it with the last one.

Actually that’s what I wanted to accomplish with that shot, and I’m really pleased with it. Matching old and new next to each other in a vertical shot, whilst doing both justice, just hasn’t worked in the past due to lack of distance/space for me to shoot from. Still waiting to find that shot.

Yeah, that’s awesome! My aunt started out by offering to do some senior portraits for an incredibly low rate, like $20, and then increased her rate as she gained more experience. She also photographed her kids and her friends for nothing just to get together a portfolio. Her business is doing well now and is entirely self-made!

That’s fantastic! Good point, I do need to get my best ones enlarged and make a port folio. I was thinking of independent magazines/websites etc not thought about portraits…. My mates have been chuffed with photo’s I’ve taken though. I wish I had a big family 😄

Yeah, she was really interested in doing landscape and city shots, so what she did was photograph her subjects in really amazing settings so she could showcase her abilities to take pictures of people AND scenery. And even if you don’t have a big family, just offer to do it for people for a low cost or for free. It’s experience for you and awesome for them! I wish you lived here and I would totally team up with you! 🙂

Oh I wish that to! That’s a cool idea subjects and buildings together. So, what kinds of people/businesses did your Aunt show her portfolio to? I’m trying to think of events where people need a photographer or portraits doing now 😃

To be honest, I’m not sure, but I could definitely ask her. She lives across the country from me, so I don’t see her on a regular basis. I will ask her the next time I talk to her, though! 🙂

Once been in Manchester, spent more time at Old Trafford than downtown, so it´s nice that you share such great pictures 🙂 Now I know what it looks like down there too.

Thanks hon. I know lots of people that live in ‘greater Manchester’ or only travel to it for work/football so it is nice to share more locations with people. I’ve lived her all my life and I’m still discovering ‘new’ old stuff :0)
