12 Realistic New Year Resolutions

  1. Rather than saying I’m going to exercise to improve my strength and stamina and then utterly side stepping the issue for the rest of the year, I’m going to just get off my arse more and move around. Housework, going to the local shops, cooking, getting off the bus a few stops earlier etc.
  2. Getting up earlier. As soon as my body and brain feel rested (even if my body feels really weak) I’m going to get out of bed. I may return with a good book and a mocha but I will officially be upright.
  3. Read more. I always say this and then don’t buy the actual books often enough. So I’m doing a big book haul so I have a reading pile, rather than a reading list.
  4. Eat breakfast everyday even if that’s just a hemp smoothie as it’s full of protein anyway and goes down easier when I’m barley awake.
  5. Shop locally more often for basic food like, coconut milk, nuts, bread, humus, fruit and veg etc.
  6. I’m going to be more optimistic and record the lovely things that happen, rather than keep replaying the crappy bits. Even if something doesn’t go perfectly, I’ll value and remember the bits that did. For every hospital or specialist visit I have I’m going to plan something nice for after, wether that’s going out for a meal or some beers and a film at home.
  7. I’m going to be more open minded about the TV series and films I choose to watch. Some have been really good surprises like the series Arested Development and Wasted which I was initially ignoring.
  8. Be my own positive role model. Too often I’ve placed all of my hopes on a health professional only to be profoundly miss-understood or let down. Even when Dorothy and her mates eventually met the Wizard of Oz he was just some old bloke who didn’t really have any answers anyway. There are so many small differences which I can make everyday, which when added together, will have a big impact on my various illnesses. It’s basically up to me to help myself first and foremost and to take responsibility for that in a positive way.
  9. Instead of spending money on objects I’m going to spend it on doing things and creating memories instead, such as going to local club nights with the Bloke and having meals out with friends more often.
  10. Have more bubble baths with epsom salts and candles.
  11. Be more mindfull in the way that I do things and take my time without feeling pressured to be quicker. I will have less accidents, do things more smoothly and feel less stressed overall.
  12. Tell the people who I care about how awesome they are and forgive them if they are a bit slow on the uptake or are moody with me. Every one has their off days after all!
