Zad’s (vegan) Takeaway Review

I call myself a vegetarian but I’m also dairy free for around 85% of the time as well. I have an intolerance to dairy anyway so if there is a dairy free option (meaning there is an actual substitution) then I’ll be happy to give that a go.

I went for a pepperoni pizza, Zad Burger (double patty, cheese, avocado, pineapple), curly fries and a gluten free cashew brownie.

After waiting for over an hour and a half my order arrived so by then I was feeling very hungry. The Zad’s burger patties were more like pâté because the texture was so soft, I found it hard to distinguish between the cheese, the avo and the burger! I get that the more you cook meat substitutes – the more they shrink, but I would rather have had two small pattie’s with some bite to them, than two large smushy things. Still, the combo of flavours was wonderful.

Curly fries, crispy and awesome as always.

Vegan pizza is a tricky thing to pull off. I’ve eaten a very half-arsed one without any vegan cheese that just had a few tomatoes and olives and a gigantic pile of dry leaves on top. I’ve had an amazing one with lots of little bits of vegan mozzarella (better than the dairy kind). Zad’s pizza was totally covered in vegan melty cheese (Vio life I’m told, which I usually like) which was a little too sweet for an entire pizza and overwhelmed the taste of the other ingredients. I did like the tomato sauce (also very sweet though) and the pepperoni was very tasty. After seasoning generously with salt and pepper I was more satisfied with the whole thing.

I was so pleased that Zad’s had a gluten free option with the cashew brownie but the dark chocolate flavour was just too strong for me – although the Bloke appreciated it. We were both looking forward to little chunks of cashew but they’d been chopped incredibly fine and had a very dry texture, rather than being a creamy addition.

Next time…

I’m going to try the Pig Save pizza for a more smokey, savoury flavour and either a hot dog or fillet burger. I think I’ll go for a cupcake if they have one.
