Barry M Holographic Eye Toppers

As soon as I saw these Holographic Eye Toppers by Barry M (£4.99) I knew I had to get at least two of the four shades because, as you know, I’m a sucker for anything shiny!

As the name suggests they are meant to go on top of eyeshadow for a highly pigmented look but you can also use them on bare lids for a subtler more ethreal look or (if you have a thin linner brush, as apposed to the doe foot applicator provided) as eyelinner. They are’t sticky, which I like but as you can imagine this does mean there is quite a bit of fall out at first. People with hooded eyes will want to keep their eyes open until it dries or you will get an unintentionally sparkly cut crease.

Here they are on top of eyeshadow which is a very similar colour and as you can see they are incredibly bright. Similar colour density when used alone as a thick stripe of eyeliner.

All shades are vegan and do not contain any beetle or fish scale.

August Monthly Round-up

Well this is a bit late as the very end of August caught me by surprise for some reason.

Style

I bought this Rick & Morty tee from EMP and it’s a slim but flattering fit, soft material and a good length for tall gals.

I reviewed some gorgeous iridescent trainers by Hype.

I was prepared for the weather changing (before the resurgence of the British heat wave) and picked out some easy Autumn fashion ideas.

Food

As a vegetarian with a wheat and dairy intolerance, I often get asked “Then what do you eat?” I decided to show everyone what’s in my fridge (items in door included).

Beauty

I bought two two products from two different ranges by Nip and Fab, that compliment each other really well. They also look a little different too! Here’s my review.

It took me a long time to realise I was defeating my hair just by washing it the wrong way, before I even started styling it! Here are my tips for turninig thick frizz into shiny waves.

I think this is fairly self explanatory, here it is.

Random

The Bloke mentioned that I tend to look very serious in a lot of my selfies so I took some silly one’s when we were having a laugh.

Gosh BB Cream

Lately I’ve wanted something lighter than foundation that still gives subtle coverage, without making my skin matte. I decided on Gosh BB Cream (£9.99, 10ml) as I’d read a lot of good reviews.

Appearance and Texture

This was easy to spread and blend and I only needed to use a light moisturiser when my skin was dry. The coverage was surprisingly good and worked a little like a CC (colour correcting) cream, evening out slight redness. My skin still looked natural and when I applied a facial oil or a reflecting primer first, my skin looked naturally radiant, without being becoming a muddy, slippy mess. I would be happy to use this BB cream instead of foundation from now on.

Wear

It lasted for around eight hours and wore off evenly, without highlighting any dry patches or gathering in pores or around my nose.

Packaging

Yes, it’s plastic but it is widely recycled.  I found squeezing the tube easier to apply the product to a foundation brush or sponge, than if I had to knock it out of a glass bottle onto my hand. It’s also less wasteful than a pump dispenser as you can squeeze out every last bit.

Oops!

Unfortunately on the Superdrug website, there are only three shades to choose from Sand, Beige and Warm Beige. I ordered this online and the Beige sample looked close to my skin tone (if a little dark), with Warm Beige being way too dark and Sand looking oddly grey. Unfortunately Beige was too cool for my skin tone, with a pink undertone, rather than a warm yellow undertone. Sleek say there are five shades, which adapt to your skins natural tone so maybe I was asking a bit too much of this particular shade.

I’ve put a golden toned filter on the photo above and as you can see, it looks much more natural to my colouring.

Luckily, a few months ago I’d bought Nip+Fab CC Cream in – wait for it – ‘Banana’ (ha!) and the two mixed together create a really accurate shade match, exactly like the filter above – hurrah!

7 Beauty Products I Really Want to Try and Why

I thought I’d share the products I’m excited to try with you and tell you why they got my attention. I say ‘try’ because I never say ‘I need to have’ something until I’ve used it before and know for sure that it’s awesome.

Ciate Mani Marker

I am stupidly excited to get my mitts on these or should I say; to get these on my mitts! I love the teal and hot pink colours and the idea of just colouring in my nails with a marker pen like I did as a kid. Far more accurate and less messy than polish and you can apply a glossy top coat if you want.

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter

Above my price range in such a way it makes me cringe slightly, this converts to 35 quid. I have spent more on a posh moisturiser (which turned out to be crap) but never on makeup before. However, this is meant to be illuminating, skin perfecting, magic in a bottle. My gosh does my skin need that in winter as I look like a Simpsons character: Flat and yellow. My Dad suggested that if I didn’t buy multiple cheaper items, then I’d be able to afford this in a month or two. Sounds fair, hehe!

e.l.f. Hydrating Face Primer

I’m going to ignore the ‘controversy’ surrounding the amount of product you get. If you ever had a Push-pop or a Push-up ice lolly as a kid, you will understand how this packaging works. Some people say this primer is perfect and some say it’s on the oilier side for a primer. As you probably know, I have combination skin that’s getting more prone to dryness as I go through my 30’s. The foundation I love isn’t exactly hydrating and doesn’t work at all with velvet finish type of primers. I tried a free sample of this and loved it!

M&S Decadent Shimmer Bath Cream

I really wanted to buy their Luxe Shimmer version which was all gold and sparkly but I waited too long and they’ve discontinued it. According to reviews, this one is still very pretty and pearlised though.

GOSH BB Cream, Beige

This is coloured and from what I’ve seen, it’s a similar colour to my skin tone. On good skin days I still want something smoothing and perfecting but also light so it’s subtly flattering for my natural skin, rather than hiding it.

Barry M Holographic Eyeshadow Topper

My eyelids have a lot of natural oils so seamlessly blending several colours to create a look is pointless because after an hour it just merges into one overall colour anyway (even with primer and setting spray). I also have a skin tone that seems to overshadow any natural/subtle colours, so I love how pigmented this is and that I can quickly roll over a single base shade and go. I have green eyes so I either go with more green or I choose a totally contrasting shade like purple which makes them pop. Always thought that sentences sounded sort of gross tbh, ha! From the reviews I read, these are visible even if you wear glasses; are in low light or have hooded eyes.

Pixi Beauty Mattelast Liquid Lip

If you follow my Instagram or you’ve read this blog for a few years, you probably know my struggle with liquid matte lipsticks. They turn my lips into shrivelled prunes – sexy. But Mattelast has received amazing reviews and won a Cosmopolitan beauty award because of it’s staying power and hydration. I’m also thinking this might be fate as this shade matches my wildly flattering, go-to dusky pink lipstick which has no bullet left and needs a lip brush to use.

July Monthly Blog Round-up

Turns out I’m still figuring out how to get my eye makeup to show up under my glasses. I’ve tried black eyeliner on the top and sparkly gold colours on my lids and lower lash line. This is the amazing result – oh. I’m going for masses of metallic blue and green liner next time, maybe a bit of pink!

Ordered from Zad’s in Chorlton as I really fancied some veggie junk food. It did not disappoint – OMG it was lush!

I reviewed the Pixi Strobe and Sculpt palette. It came out at just the right time when I needed to restock a few things, which all happened to be included in this palette! Read my review here.

Not so great timing was finding this yellow colour corrector by Nip and Fab which you can mix with foundation that’s too orange – when I’d just thrown out three foundation which were, yup, too orange. Still, useful for that in the future and I can use it under lighter coverage foundation to tone down any redness I have.

I found some really nice firm tofu called Toofoo. It’s great grilled with a coating of chilli oil or some BBQ sauce.

Screen Shot 2018-07-31 at 17.42.46

When I heard that LUSH were releasing a solid foundation called Slap Stick and that it came in 40 shades with three undertones, I had to try it. See what I thought here.

37321572_10156454311892487_5753068835695493120_n

After half a year of summer I’d gotten a bit fed up coconut water or almond milk based smoothies. I chucked a load of blueberries and raspberries and water into a blender and blended thoroughly, then I added around 10 ice cubes and pulsed to create a slushy . It tasted wonderful!

Screen Shot 2018-07-31 at 17.43.18

I bought some amazing unicorn inspired brushes and realised I couldn’t fit them into any makeup bags I own. I saw this sparkly pencil case in Tesco and they fit great…Now that I’ve sawn off the giant pointy bit at the end. I actually think they look better now and are easier to use.

Screen Shot 2018-07-31 at 17.44.13

I have combination hair, y’know oily roots, meh mid-lengths and frizzy ends. I can’t tell you how many pre-wash treatments or overnight treatments I’ve used and two thirds of my hair LOVED them but my roots looked like I’d been at a festival – for a year. So I thought I’d share these two products that have solved the need for all of that, read the post here.

Slap Stick Foundation LUSH

I care a lot about environment because the planet is my home and also home to so many other people, plants and creatures who depend on it functioning properly. I’m doing my best to support companies committed to reducing waste packaging or using recycled/recyclable packaging so I was looking forward to trying Slap Stick £16.95, 30g from LUSH. It’s a solid foundation egg, flat on one side and coated in wax (so you have some part to hold), which lives in a little cardboard box…

…That was until I opened it and it already looked a mess and then when I tried to lower it back into it’s box, I covered the sides in foundation and when I tried to close the lid it skimmed some foundation off the top of the stick! I get that LUSH are trying to reduce packaging but to reduce it to the size that it doesn’t actually fit the product? Ah – no.

The second thing that really attracted me to this product was the range has 40 shades, including warm, neutral and cool undertones and yellow/golden tones in general. The website matches the staff from LUSH to the shades in videos and there is a handy comparison photo showing three peoples arms sampling the whole range. I think I have pale-medium skin with warm (yellow) undertones as my veins look purple and teal; not blue or green as is the most common way you are supposed to be able tell. So I chose 12W.

The line in-between the shadow on my face near my ear and the glow of light on the front of my cheek, is where I’ve left the foundation unblended. Perfect match! Even though the stick looks too dark, the colour is surprisingly sheer but the coverage is still medium.

Slap Stick contains a massive 45% coconut oil as well as Jojoba oil so it moisturises skin. I know that some people do tend to break out with coconut oils because of allergies so I’m a little surprised they chose this ingredient but fortunately my dry skin absolutely loves it!

The texture is like a cream to powder compact and the only way I was able to spread it was to apply, leave for a few minutes and then spread with the warmth of my fingers. It stayed put all day though and covered any redness I had.

Pixi – Strobe and Sculpt Palette

Pixi, Strobe and Sculpt Palette £24 – designed by beauty blogger Maryam Maquillage – is perfect for when you want to glow on the go! Practical for when you are travelling and also a simple way to get into highlighting, contouring and strobbing (which is subtly highlighting EVERYTHING – even with contour – so you look rather ethreal) as there are instructions on the packaging of how to use everything.

I wanted a more golden high-lighter/strobber than the one I had and I also needed a new contour and basic face powder as I dropped and smashed both of them. I tend to improvise by using eyeshadow or even lipstick as blush and never thought I’d find everything in the one palette! The mineral powders deliver a surprising amount of pigment so I only the lightest sweep is needed. I get the feeling this will last a very ong time.

I’ve tested this on my pale inside arm to give more contrast, and to show you the shades individually. I love the warm tone to this palette but it also has a contour which is more grey than brown, giving a very realistic shadow tone.

Not quite sure why all of the contour isn’t showing right up to my ear (above photo) so I took one in shadow (below). To give you an idea of what is real and what isn’t: The contour which carries on downward toward my mouth is my natural contour. I have a long slim face, with very high cheek bones but really chubby cheeks!

This palette is going to reduce my getting-ready-time so much as everything is all together and has similar textures and application methods. After using all of the palette my skin looks more glowing and natural, than if I’d have just used a light foundation!

Monthly Roundup – May

I started May being a little obsessed with everything pink and grey and wore the same two basic outfits for most of the week. Check out the OOTD post to see the other outfit and where to shop both looks.

I’ve returned to The Body Shop now that they have a parent company who are committed to be cruelty free. I love a non-drying lip colour you can apply easily so I use a lot of tinted balms and glosses. Unfortunately Born Lippy gave me a sore throat immediately! Some do and I’ve never figured out why. I’m using it as a blush instead as the colour is very subtle and sheer.

It was my birthday so me and the Bloke headed off for An Afternoon in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.  Which involved picking up my first ever comics for Free Comic Book Day, trying some new health foods, taking photo’s like a tourist and then dinner and cocktails at V Revolution.

After hearing of the demise of Polyvore I posted all of my style mood-boards and outfit boards that I’d made over the years in two posts here and here.

I decided that now my skin has changed from oily-combination to dry-combination I’d try B. Pure Micellar Water instead of cleanser and toner.

Another OOTD, this one inspired by Johnny Cash; Smart, Dark, Country.

I’d not received any blogger nominated awards for years and then two came along at once. I decided to go with The Mystery Blogger Award as it sounded a bit different and I only had the energy to do one!

We decided to eat again as we’d had a tough week and I’d been inside for days. So we cashed in our Tesco vouchers and headed to Pizza Express for large glasses of wine, gluten free pasta, a giant super food salad and caramel gelato with salted caramel sauce.

I was in the mood to do a wish list post and chose the Woodland Trust S/S shop. I think it’s importance is growing along with issues like global warming, extinction of native species and disappearing woodlands, due to mass farming of mono cultures and countryside being built on.

My skin has a nice healthy glow to it, thanks to the sun but my foundation kinda kills that a little so I thought I’d try and put some back with Drops of Glow, Lustre Finish Creator in Illuminator. Why do products practically have two names squished together, these days?

The Body Shop, Drops of Glow Lustre Finish Creator – Illuminating

The Body Shop, really?

I avoided the brand for years when it got purchased by animal testing L’Oreal but now it’s been bought by Natura Cosmeticos (the largest beauty producer in Brazil) I’ve started to tentativley buy from them again. Natura Cosmeticos use natural ingredients that are cruelty-free (as are their finished products) and sustainably sourced. They also pledge to now reduce the carbon footprint of their brands and stores and do not sell to China.

The Body Shop, Drops of Glow Lustre Finish Creator – Illuminating (£12, 15ml)

I wanted an illuminating product that could be worn under foundation and patted over it as a subtle highlight on cheekbones and collar bone. I use a medium-full coverage ELF foundation because it’s one of the few foundations that actually matches my skin tone and stays put. Unfortunately, it also makes my skin look totally matte so I thought this would be perfect to give it a lift.

Without foundation

Gives a very sweaty gym bunny look – next!

Under foundation

Gives my matte foundation and new lease of life. I looked glowy and healthy, even when I applied powder. Unfortunately I had to apply bronzing because my face was radiating so much white light, it looked too pale and also like I was sickly and sort of clammy.

Unfortunately this is just too pinky/cool for my skin tone. If I used too much, I could easily be heading down the yellow brick road into Tin Man territory. But pale girls could totally carry this off for an ethereal look, I’m sure.

Durabilty wasn’t great. I noticed that after around three hours of hot, humid weather, my amazing wear-proof foundation was gathering in my pores, in my (ahem) lines and literally sliding off my face.

Under foundation

As a highlighter on cheek bones, nose and chin

This is a winner when applied sparingly, as it’s sheeny and glowy, rather than obviously sparkly. You can build it up though to have more impact and it stayed on in the club. I didn’t expect that!

Over all

I get that The Body Shop has these ‘drops’ to mix with your foundation to make it lighter or darker or for a strobing effect but I think the names of these products are a little OTT; as if the longer the tittle – the better the product. This one is a liquid highlighter basically. I like the glass bottle and pipette as you can apply directly to face or sponge with no mess. Sadly, it just wasn’t versatile enough for me.

Best Stationary – I bought this diary from Paperchase as I loved the colours and the layout. I decided to use it as a ‘Best thing today’ or ‘happiness’ journal where I write down anything positive that happened that day, even if it was just getting creative in the kitchen for lunch.

Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 21.04.15

Best Dairy-free Snack – These Ten Acre crisps taste amazing! I had three people insisting that they read the ingredients because they just couldn’t believe they were dairy free. Gluten and MSG free too.

March

Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 22.56.26

Best Cruelty-free, Temporary, Hair Dye – Manic Panick (the one in a tub) has a thick consistency which means it’s really easy to dip a tint brush into and apply, without getting it every where. It comes in every colour you can imagine and is gentle on coarse/dry/damaged hair. It started out a deep teal colour and has now faded to this after around 12 washes.

Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 21.27.05

Best Place To Buy Affordable Jeans – Matalan. Yup, for real. They do various fits with several styles in each. I chose a skinny, mid-rise style. Even if if you have a food-baby the next day it doesn’t matter because they stretch to fit, which also means you can wear them for ages before they go baggy at the knees and need washing.

March Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 19.08.57

Best Cruelty-free Mens Skincare – My Bloke loves Bull Dog Original range because it doesn’t have a strong scent and is cruelty free with no unnecessary ingredients so it’s very simple yet effective.

Best Place For Omnivores and Vegetarians To Eat Together – Zouk. I was invited to try their new menu and found that there were enough choices to keep me satisfied and the food was of good quality and cooked well. There’s also a little cocktail bar with a wonderful menu. I can imagine most groups of friends being happy here.

Best Cruelty-free Nail Polish – I love the original colours and finishes that Zoya offer. I’ve also found that it’s very gentle on my brittle nails and last as long as other ‘long wear’ polishes which are double the price.

April Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 19.40.14

Best Manchester Outdoor Space – Fletcher Moss. Is a beautiful landscaped garden filled with flowers, trees and a pond, with a little heather garden to the side. They have toilets (very rustic) and a cafe. Stenner Wood is right behind if you want to feel like you are in the countryside for a little while.

April Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 19.37.39

Best Cruelty-free Household Product – Beauty Kitchen. I know a lot of people who wouldn’t dream of using beauty products tested on animals but never consider getting CF items for around the house. Gentle on sensitive and/or dry skin with a beautiful scent this organic hand wash is a winner.

April Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 19.27.27

Best Alternative Online Shop – EMP have branched out from rock/goth wear, band merch and geek pop-culture to also include urban style. Honestly, I could browse it all day. Some clothing items can be a bit pricey (depending on the brand) but they have little twists of originality, are of high quality and the sizing charts are the most accurate I’ve come across.

April Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 19.15.04

Best Dairy-free Easter Chocolate – Choices, found in Holland & Barrett and supermarket free-from isles – if you are lucky. Remember those white mice you used to get as a kid? Well this is 100% better!

May

May Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 20.11.13

Best Spirit – Dark rum in general of course but has to be Sailor Jerry, followed very closely by The Kraken. SJ took it for their perpetually creative labelling.

May Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 20.08.32

Best Unexpected Bargain – I got bored while my bloke was in the army surplus shop and found this tiny vest on sale! I chopped the neck out slightly so it was more flattering.

May Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 20.05.41

Best Tidy Solution – I used this pretty box a prezzie came in and an old watch tin a friend gave me to store the makeup that I use daily. I’ve chucked out anything that really wasn’t working for me and the rest (very similar colours to what’s here already or party makeup) is in a transparent wash bag under the sink. So much quicker to see what I’ve got and where it is!

May Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 20.04.08

Best Indian Eatery – Hands down has to be Lilly’s in Ashton, Greater Manchester. They have an extensive but comprehensive menu of the most delicious vegetarian food. From hearty traditional dishes to quick street food for lunch and creative combinations of ingredients on their Indo-Chinese menu, you will want to visit several times to try it all.

May Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 20.02.57

Best Cruelty-free Makeup Brand – Elf. Every single one of their product I’ve used has worked perfectly for me. Products are true to how they’ve been shown/described on the site, they are easy to apply and long wearing. Worst goes to Soap & Glory – just ugh!

 June

June Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 22.57.22

Best Charity Merchandise – This One Love Manchester jumper I bought for the survivors of the Manchester Arena bombing. Obviously being a Manc this is very close to my heart but I genuinely love the graffiti style of lettering.

June Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 20.16.36

Best Cruelty-free Shampoo – Weleda, Calendula Shampoo and Body Wash. Rarely have I come across a shampoo that is so gentle on my coarse frizzy hair as this. Some ‘natural’ shampoo’s I’ve used have left my hair matted and feeling like straw but I didn’t even need conditioner after this! As usual I just oiled my hair when it was still damp and left to air dry. Perfect.

June Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 20.19.25

Best Full Vegetarian or Vegan Eatery – V Revolution. Creative American-style fast food, which is surprisingly healthy and tastes of individual ingredients, rather than salt and ketchup. Order a White Russian cocktail for a glass of heaven.

June Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 20.17.55

Best Energy Drink or Snack – I had to go with Rockstar as they taste like fizzy pop, rather than that sickly, slightly medicinal thing other energy drinks have going on. I fill a drinks bottle with 2/3 energy drink, 1/3 water and a pinch of salt and sip it when I’m flagging to keep my energy and electrolyte levels up. One bottle usually lasts me two days.

July

July Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 23.06.36

Best Cruelty-free All Round Moisturiser – Faith in Nature Coconut Body Lotion. I use this on my body and my face as it’s thin enough to sink in quickly without being oily.

July Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 23.05.44

Best Accessory – I’ve looked at so many pins from various places this year. This Milk & Moon one was thoughtfully packaged and the gold and black theme looks classy rather than cartoonish, which is what I wanted.

July Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 23.04.06

Best Book – Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor (YA Fiction) is the perfect blend of fantasy and every day, which escalates to serious proportions. Easy to read, with engaging characters and a plot which could lead literally anywhere.

July Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 23.06.14

Best Funko Pop! – I have to go with The Cheshire Cat from (the modern) Alice in Wonderland. He’s so quirky-cute and makes me smile every time I notice him. Plus the fur and stripe detailing is really well done.

Best Book I Would Recommend – I do love The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern but the first part of the book, before the two main characters even meet was hard going for me. However, I thought the rest was wonderful and utterly absorbing.

Best High Street/Drug Store Cruelty-free Makeup – Well, Topshop makeup is new to me as I’d never used it before. Affordable, great colour payoff, easy to apply and stays put. I’m really impressed!

Best Dairy Free Choccy – Sarelle is like a Fererro Rocher but with sweet dark chocolate, rather than milk. This is a decent sized choccy bar but it still isn’t big enough, ha!

Best Cruelty-free Party Makeup – Barry M, Matte Me Up lip linner and lip paint. Metallic, yet oddly matte this is actually really wearable for anyone with an olive-dark skin tone. I think if you were paler, you would be making a much bigger statement with it.

Best Fashion Trend – Apart from Rosegold – which I’ve always liked since I was a 13 year old looking at jewellery in the Argos catalogue – it has to be knitwear with subtle corset and grunge detailing, mainly fraying, large gaps in the crochet and random lacing.

Best Veggie Sweets – Made with real fruit juice, these Organic Mini Fruit Bears by Biona are possibly the tastiest sweets I’ve ever tried. Everyone I know who’s tried them – loved them.

Best Tech – Nokia 105. You can drop it, accidentally sit on it, play different versions of Snake on it, it’s a petty retro colour, it has a torch which is actually effective, it’s really light weight, no scally will want to rob it off you and you will only need to charge it twice in your life time. Bargain!

Best Cruelty-free Lipbalm/Skin Saviour – I know that I could just buy a big cheap jar of coconut oil from the local market but Dr. Organic is organic (duh), contains an SPF 15 and is so handy to carry around. One of the very few things that makes any noticeable difference to my lips at all.

Best Healthy Convenience Food – This veggie sushi from Tesco is as tasty as it is pretty.

Best Homeware – I love the duck egg blue colour of this Tesco blanket and it is unbelievably soft! I live in it now – we are one.

Best Alternative/Independent High Street Shop – Aflecks, Tib Street/Oldham Street (established the year I was born – a fact which I love). This giant maze-like building s an Alladin’s cave of independent shops. I don’t know any other place where you will find quality fancy dress, vinyl records, American candy, vintage clothes, Japanese imports, band merchandise, a vegan shop, a cute cafe, a clothes embellishing and customising service, retro toys/collectibles, rave/rock/urban clothing, cruelty free makeup and hair dye, along with piercing, tattooing and hairdressing studio’s.

I hope you enjoyed my alternative 2017 awards!
