What Does Someone Who is Plant Based and Gluten-free Actually Eat?! A Look Inside my Fridge and Cupboard

Hello lovely people! ✨💙✨

Even if you have a vegetarian, gluten-free and/or dairy-free diet (mine is for ethical and food intolerance reasons), there are still so many things you can eat! So I thought I’d share my tiny fridge and stupidly large cupboard with you.

Top (left to right) Nairn’s Whole Grain (gf) Crackers, Momasa Lemon and Peppercorn tortilla chips, Biona Fruit Bears, Kind Dark Choc, Nuts & Sea Salt, Pulsin Brownie Peanut & Choc Chip.

Middle Asda Sesame Oil, Felippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Wicked Kitchen Garlic and Herb Nooch (nutritional yeast which gives things a cheesy taste like mild Parmesan), Nice and Easy Cheese Flavour Sauce Mix, Amy’s Kitchen Tomato Soup, Amy’s Kitchen Lentil Soup, Amoy Rice Noodles.

Bottom Kikkoman Gluten Free Soy Sauce, Le Conserve Detla Nonna Green (vegan) Pesto, Nice and Easy Chickpea and Vegetable Curry, Garlic cloves (I prefer garlic purée in a tube lol), Tilda Microwave Mushroom Rice, Morrison’s Hot Paprika, Ground Black Pepper.

Top shelf Vitalite spread, Clover spread (my Dad’s), mushrooms, gluten free Peroni, radishes.

Middle shelf Olives, bananas (no idea ?!), more beer, guacamole, humus, halloumi (the blokes), Vivera kebab strips.

Bottom shelf Always some kind of energy drink, cranberry and apple sauce, jars of antipasti, spring onions, bell (sweet) pepper.

In the door Fresh orange and mango juice, eye gel (so cooling!), Mayo, sriracha, chilli oil.

Nearly every item here was bought from either Asda, Morrison’s or Tesco but the dairy free guacamole was from Ocado (as I don’t have the time and energy to make it myself).

I hope this post helps to make any transitions in your diet and/or lifestyle a little easier!

The Best Gluten Free Pizza in Manchester

Hello lovely people ✨💙✨

I’m so glad I’ve come across Ask Italian, a nationwide restaurant chain that has wonderful vegetarian options, a gluten-free pizza and pasta menu, plus a vegan menu.

This is their Non-Gluten Verdure pizza, with mushroom, red pepper, black olives, artichoke, mozzarella and basil (£9.95) You can add any extra topping and a spicy tomato dip to your order for around a quid each.

This has to be the best gluten-free base that I’ve ever tasted. It’s thin, floppy but still slightly crispy, like a traditional Italian base. It doesn’t have that thick, flowery texture that gf takeaway bases have.

Gluten Free BBQ Burger from Wholesome Junkies

Hello lovely people!

This is the gluten free double BBQ burger (with ‘cheese’ and ‘bacon’ from Wholesome Junkies. It’s got me thinking that burger buns should be replaced with a huge amount of crunchy (massively loaded) fries as standard!

The portion is so generous, this has been my tea and now my dinner. 😛😋

Simple Veggie Ch!cken Burrito

Hello lovely people!

Here’s a very simple veggie ‘ch!cken’ burrito I made, which tastes amazing! I stuffed so much in I could hardly hold it – hence the action shot, hehee!

BFree gluten free Wrap generously splashed with water and steamed in microwave. I’ve just discovered their Sweet Potato wraps which are wonderful.

How I Gained Weight and Got Healthier Over 10 Years

Hello lovely people! Someone suggested it might be a nice idea to share my weight gain and consequent health journey with you.

The reality of me being so thin and also unhealthy in my late 20’s early 30’s:

I was ALWAYS cold; if I got ill I’d become under weight and weak so easily; if I fell down (which I am prone to do when fatigued/not concentrating) I’d get really hurt because I had no padding over my bones; I struggled carrying my heavy boobs around on such a narrow frame and always had a bad back. I was so pale and not olive skinned like I should naturally be (which I covered up with fake tan).

BUT I was constantly told by people that I looked amazing and should feel grateful that I was ‘so skinny’.

I honestly thought through my 20’s and early 30’s that it was normal for young people to be over-worked, slightly stressed and to push their body to it’s limits and then prop it up with caffeine, sugar and beer/cocktails because that seemed the social norm at the time.

How I got healthy in my 30’s:

I mostly cut out foods containing gluten and dairy as I have an intolerance to them (meaning the body doesn’t absorb nutrients from those foods as it can’t digest them properly but it can, confusingly, make people look fat/bloated in places). I eat regular balanced meals with enough protein. I priorities sleep (even though that means saying no to morning invites). I don’t push myself to the limit of my strength and energy for fear of missing out (using up all of my body’s resources). I got a full blood work-up and found I was totally lacking in B12 and Vit D (no wonder I was so weak, brain fogged and grey!).

Even though I have MS now, I still feel healthier overall these days!

Gluten Free (English) Pancakes

I call these English pancakes because they are thicker than French crapes but no where near as thick as bread-like Scotch or US pancakes.

Ingredients for gluten free pancakes is equal amounts of

Eggs

Milk

Cornflower – you will need to keep slowly adding more cornflower and blending until you get your desired consistency.

Top with masses of sugar and lemon juice.

Here’s The Bloke being a right tosser. 😉 I managed one perfect flip and then tossed the second one so enthusiastically, it landed on the floor – on the other side of the kitchen! 🤣

Bol Plant Based Dinner Boxes

Whilst shopping online at Tesco I stumbled across the Bol range of dinner boxes, which are plant based ready-meals in a cardboard tray (thankfully not plastic, which is a bit of a deal-breaker for me).

Fire Roasted Cauliflower-Tikka Masala

The Tika Masala wasn’t quite sweet enough and I had no idea where the ‘sweet pickled onions’ were!? I did really like the combination of ingredients though.

Caribbean Jerk, Rice and Peas

This tasted like it was homemade comfort food at its best.

Thai Panang Coconut Curry

I thought this contained too much lemongrass and citrus flavour and not enough coconut so I added two pinches of sugar. The butternut squash was cooked perfectly.

South Indian Spiced Chickpea Curry

Again, the flavour of citrus overwhelmed the other flavours, which I balanced by adding some sugar.

Overall

I noticed that every meal had a lot of ‘leafy greens’ in them, which I didn’t mind but it was rather repetitive.

I loved all of the chutneys and used them on the rice and greens. I don’t usually like quinoa but mixed with rice it tasted lovely.

I’d buy these again because they are a quick and simple way of getting vegetarian and dairy free, balanced meals for one, which I’d never be able to cook for my self.

Gluten and Dairy Free Savoury Snack Haul

It wasn’t until I went gluten and dairy-free that I realised most crisps have lactose or wheat gluten in their flavouring. I’ve often walked down a whole crisp (and flavoured nut) isle, reading all of the ingredients on everything, only to end up buying salt and vinegar or Thai sweet chilli flavour yet again.

So I thought this might be handy for anyone with the same intolerances/allergies.

Middle: Oh So Delish (Aldi) Wasabi peas, Ten Acre When the Cheese Met the Onion, Bombay Mix, Salted roasted Peanuts.

Visit to Bundobust – Indian Vegetarian Street Food and Bar – Manchester

I’ve always loved that Bundobust is a no frills, eco friendly canteen and bar (even the cutlery is biodegradable), serving Indian street food.

It’s really spacious but still manages to be cozy and friendly. We reserved a booth because I’m not able to climb into and sit on the bench seating, plus we wanted to be isolated because of Covid.

They have gluten free beer, mango lassi, cocktails, chai tea, the most delicious peshwari paratha (sweet bread) and kulfi (pistachio ice cream).

Saag Aloo (spinach and potato); Paneer, mushroom and pepper kebabs; Peshwari Paratha (sweet bread); Sev Puri (Dry noodle, layers of samosa, yoghurt and tamarind sauce); Okra fries.

I’ve taken screen shots from my Instagram to remind me, and show you what I’ve been up to this month.

Skincare and Haircare

I cut my curly hair using tips from Brad Mondo and tips from various natural hair vloggers to style my 2C curls.

I changed my contraception so got quite a few hormonal spots and this Body Shop Tea Tree, Skin Clearing Mattifying Toner was invaluable; as was The Ordinary, Lactic Acid which very gently and naturally exfoliates.

Now it’s the end of August and my skin has settled so I’m using Neal’s Yard Remedies Orange Flower Toner and Orange Flower Moisturiser everyday to keep my skin all glowy and nourished (along with the The Ordinary Lactic Acid twice a week).

Food, glorious food!

Me and my bloke spent our Tesco vouchers on Pizza Express (who will be going into liquidation next month apparently) and order two ‘new’ veggie pizzas and all of the salad.

To take advantage of the governments ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme we went to Ruyi Vegetarian Restaurant. Amazing!

I’ve gotten back into the fake meat brand Vivera and have been making simple stir-fries. Like these Vivera Shwarma Kebab strips with rice and pea and sweet corn and Jamaican Jerk BBQ sauce.

The hot weather made really reduced my appetite so these mezze/tapas style bowls were great to nibble on.

Style

I’ve had purchasing a Nirvana tee at the back of my mind for decades and this month I found an official pale pink one. Cute and grungy!

I got sick of buying summer shoes that were either too flat and bad for my shitty joints or too heavy or that flew off my feet going down stairs. I bit the bullet and bought Crocs. I actually think these look pretty bad-ass as they remind me of late 80’s/early 90’s street style. Here’s my full review of Crocs.

I still think the simplest thing to wear is a maxi dress. Hides a ton of sins and all you have to choose are shoes and then a jacket/cardigan for evening.

Lifestyle

In the crazy hot weather I’ve been wearing these sandals from Newlook, drinking Rockstar blueberry energy drink, using this light and fruity perfume from Eden and ( even with my limited concentration span) flew through My Sister The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite.

The households charity shop donations for the second quarter of the year: A crazy wide pair of linen trousers, a face scrub you have to mix from powder (I managed to spill the first pot everywhere), vest I’m now too big for, too small jeans, a teeny-tiny dress from Japan, shoes which I’ve had over a decade and worn out.
