Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter

What the brand says….

‘The ultimate high gloss, high glow celebrity-skin-filter-in-a-bottle! This was born on the red carpet makeup, inspired by technology, for real life, in real time that looks amazing on-screen or off.

Smoothing airbrush polymers roll over your complexion for a poreless-looking, creamy finish.

Glossy Oil is a lightweight moisturising oil that reflects and adds light to your face where you need it.

Finely milled powders soft focus, makes lines and pores appear smoother which means it only ever looks as amazing in real life, as it does on camera.

Porcelain Flower Extract is a brightening ingredient derived from a Thai flower with natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to enhance microcirculation and brighten skin.

Ideal for superstar-lit skin whether you want a subtle glow or a mega-watt complexion.’

What I want this for…

As you probably know, I have uneven skin texture thanks to having bad skin into my early twenties and I easily get bags (from dehydration/gluten indulgence) so big they carve two lines into my cheeks. I’m proud of how clear and fairly even toned my complexion is these days but I still need a hand with the overall texture and a little redness sometimes. I like CC and BB creams but find they can either be too pale, making me go from tomato red to an eerie green-yellow or they are too transparent and shiny. I chose Flawless Filter as it offers medium coverage, is available in a surprising amount of shades, and then there’s the whole ‘flawless filter’ part.

Before purchasing Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter £30 I read a lot of reviews; a huge amount said it very good but a few said it was awful but unlike me, they had dry skin.

The packaging…

I love the recyclable glass bottle but would prefer a pump rather than the doe foot applicator as it totally fails at applying this type of product and leaves a massive amount in the bottom, which you’d have to tip onto the back of your hand like 1990’s foundations.

The bigger problem with it…

Above; before using the product, makeup free in dim afternoon sunlight. Not too bad but not great either. Much worse, in fact when there’s a lot of contrasting light and shadow.

Here’s me wearing the product. Talk about unflattering – contrasting light! I’ve taken the photo in the same dull afternoon light but it’s still managed to highlight all of my pores, lines and the orange peel effect on my cheeks and even eye bags. Thanks for that Tilbury. I can see how it might work on me in blindingly bright California sunshine but even then, as soon as I went indoors it wouldn’t.

My conclusion….

I have to say the coverage is surprisingly good and the realistic skin tone shades meant that number 3 Light/Medium was perfect for me – not usually an easy thing.

If you have smooth skin but slight redness or dark circles this could be great for medium coverage and added radiance.

If you are older but have been lucky in the genes lottery this might be incredibly flattering for you.

If you are like me you really want avoid it, unless you want to use it as a very expensive highlighter.

On days where I’m very red, I use a full coverage foundation from ELF and I’ve started mixing a teeny-tiny bit Flawless Filter in with it, so my skin doesn’t look as matte and flat with just the foundation. I also use it very sparingly as a realistic looking highlighter on my cheek bones, collar bone and down the front of my shins.

PHB All In One Natural Mascara Review

natural mascara

PHB All In One Natural Mascara (15.95) is made with natural ingredients hence the word ‘natural’ in the tittle. It does not refer to the effect it gives lashes, which I’m glad about as I need all of the help I can get in that department.

  • Gluten free
  • Paraben free
  • Palm oil free
  • Mineral oil free
  • GM ingredient free
  • Organic
  • Buav approved
  • Certified vegan

41555302_10156593414822487_7419172330116481024_n

I have very long but very sparse eyelashes so I need a mascara which will easily build volume but also keep lashes separate, rather than spiky. That is exactly what this mascara does. It also glides on really easily without any clumps, no matter how many layers you add and gives lashes a slight glossy look. There is always a big blob of mascara on the end of the wand so I use it to add depth to the roots of my lashes. I haven’t even used eyelash curlers here – impressive result!

41555333_10156593443227487_9127945753392578560_n

As much as I love this mascara, it’s not very water proof so no going out in torrential rain or swimming.

The formula is increadibly gentle as I found out when I rubbed my eyes vigorously when really tired and managed to spread it all over my face and eyeballs. It didn’t irritate at all and I was oblivious until someone gleefully pointed out that I looked like Imperator Furiosa from Mad Max.

I’ve worn it a lot since and every time I’ve been too tired to take my makeup off before bed, I’ve woken up with lovely soft lashes that weren’t dry or broken. So I’d say this mascara actually cares for lashes too.

7 Beauty Products I Really Want to Try and Why

I thought I’d share the products I’m excited to try with you and tell you why they got my attention. I say ‘try’ because I never say ‘I need to have’ something until I’ve used it before and know for sure that it’s awesome.

Ciate Mani Marker

I am stupidly excited to get my mitts on these or should I say; to get these on my mitts! I love the teal and hot pink colours and the idea of just colouring in my nails with a marker pen like I did as a kid. Far more accurate and less messy than polish and you can apply a glossy top coat if you want.

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter

Above my price range in such a way it makes me cringe slightly, this converts to 35 quid. I have spent more on a posh moisturiser (which turned out to be crap) but never on makeup before. However, this is meant to be illuminating, skin perfecting, magic in a bottle. My gosh does my skin need that in winter as I look like a Simpsons character: Flat and yellow. My Dad suggested that if I didn’t buy multiple cheaper items, then I’d be able to afford this in a month or two. Sounds fair, hehe!

e.l.f. Hydrating Face Primer

I’m going to ignore the ‘controversy’ surrounding the amount of product you get. If you ever had a Push-pop or a Push-up ice lolly as a kid, you will understand how this packaging works. Some people say this primer is perfect and some say it’s on the oilier side for a primer. As you probably know, I have combination skin that’s getting more prone to dryness as I go through my 30’s. The foundation I love isn’t exactly hydrating and doesn’t work at all with velvet finish type of primers. I tried a free sample of this and loved it!

M&S Decadent Shimmer Bath Cream

I really wanted to buy their Luxe Shimmer version which was all gold and sparkly but I waited too long and they’ve discontinued it. According to reviews, this one is still very pretty and pearlised though.

GOSH BB Cream, Beige

This is coloured and from what I’ve seen, it’s a similar colour to my skin tone. On good skin days I still want something smoothing and perfecting but also light so it’s subtly flattering for my natural skin, rather than hiding it.

Barry M Holographic Eyeshadow Topper

My eyelids have a lot of natural oils so seamlessly blending several colours to create a look is pointless because after an hour it just merges into one overall colour anyway (even with primer and setting spray). I also have a skin tone that seems to overshadow any natural/subtle colours, so I love how pigmented this is and that I can quickly roll over a single base shade and go. I have green eyes so I either go with more green or I choose a totally contrasting shade like purple which makes them pop. Always thought that sentences sounded sort of gross tbh, ha! From the reviews I read, these are visible even if you wear glasses; are in low light or have hooded eyes.

Pixi Beauty Mattelast Liquid Lip

If you follow my Instagram or you’ve read this blog for a few years, you probably know my struggle with liquid matte lipsticks. They turn my lips into shrivelled prunes – sexy. But Mattelast has received amazing reviews and won a Cosmopolitan beauty award because of it’s staying power and hydration. I’m also thinking this might be fate as this shade matches my wildly flattering, go-to dusky pink lipstick which has no bullet left and needs a lip brush to use.

Hair Styling Essentials from Hemp

Finding beauty products that aren’t animal tested is fairly easy these days but finding cruelty free hair styling products – especially one’s which work on natural, coarse, wavy hair – is almost impossible.

So I was thrilled to get a chance to try some of Hempz Herbal hair styling range, which include nourishing hemp seed oil and also smell so good, that if they were a cocktail, I’d be ordering three of it.

Instant Dry Shampoo

This changed my hair from greasy, split mess to fairytale-like tresses. I just spray it on (with no powder residue) and gently brush my hair through with a paddle brush with thick plastic bristles. My hair looks clean and shiny and smells of pineapples!

Rating 5/5

Workable Hairspray Medium Hold

I have a love hate relationship with hairspray; I love that it holds my wild hair in place but hate that it makes  tangled mess when I try to brush it out. Hempz hairspray is tough on holding a style but fairly easy to brush out and leaves hair feeling soft and looking shiny. Then there’s that uplifting pineapple scent again, so you don’t even have to leave the room for a moment, after you’ve used it. I wouldn’t say this could hold a large volume of hair in a gravity-defying style but then it is only supposed to be ‘medium hold’.

Flexible Styling Sculpt

My fringe is a cartoonishly-big, frizzy canopy when freshly washed but using this made having a fringe enjoyable, rather than a chore for the first time, ever! I can absent mindedly shove it into a quiff off my face if the weather is too hot and then just spread it out again into smooth waves when I want. If I want a glam look, I can sweep it into a low side parting and it just stays there, looking effortless. It’s also useful as a curl cream if there are unruly strands that hair oil cannot shape and tame. Just for example: Here is my hair before I’ve oiled it, with the front strand covered in Flexible Styling Sculpt and gently twisted.

Norvelle 4 Faces Facial Tanning Spray & Body Buff Exfoliating Ph Balancing Mitt

Norvelle are British brand who serious about tanning, they are even used on Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing With The Stars. They offer a comprehensive range of products depending on how dark you want to go and how you prefer to apply your product. They are BUAV (leaping bunny) approved to not test on animals.

4 Faces Facial Tanning Spray (£9.99 2floz)

The Science Bit

Time Release Micro Capsules bind moisture within the skin, for 24hr hydration.
Natural Enzymes repair weak, dehydrated skin.
Unique Dermal Barrier locks DHA within the top layer of skin, priming it for Longer Lasting, Deeper, Sunless Results.
Advanced DHA Odor Encapsulation molecules ‘trap’ and virtually eliminate common sunless odor.
Non-Comedogenic Facial Quality Formula designed for delicate facial skin and will not clog pores.
Just of the Beach Color™ patented blend of DHA and bronzers found only in Norvell Professional products.

Application of Facial Spray

It’s suggested that you spray this facial tan onto a beauty blender to apply it. The first one absorbed most of it and then it ran straight off the second one. Clearly, I need to up my beauty blender game! So instead, I prepped my face with some rich moisturiser and sprayed this straight onto my skin and blended with my fingers and palms. The spray is very uneven and does not come out like a mist. The nozzle is incredibly hard to press down (and not just with my hypermobile fingers, my friend struggled too) so some work is definitely required either way you apply this. I’m going for the mouse if I ever buy this myself.

31065626_10156246085527487_8112197035601547292_n

Please excuse the shadows on the left of my face, this was the most true light, rather than blanching me out in glaring sunshine.

Result! (Yes, I am actually shouting that out loud)

Spray tan usually makes my skin so dry and it settles in all of my expression lines but my skin remained hydrated, even through the next day. When my skin was wet I patted it dry with a white towel and the tan didn’t transfer. Well, that’s a first! I have been wearing darker coloured tops incase it rubs off around my neckline though. I had a very faint freshly painted smell but that faded quickly. I’m still waiting for it to go patchy five days later but it’s not budging. I’ve just exfoliated (because my skin needed it, not the tan) and even now I’m still tanned and glowing!

I have a realistic colour that works wonderfully with my natural skin tone and I wonder if this is because I diluted the colour a little with my moisturiser. I can imagine you could go really quite dark with a few layers of just this product, even though there are much darker one’s available in the range.

Pre Sunless Body Buff Exmitt Exfoliating Ph Balancing Mitt (£5.99)

The Science Bit

Boosts Amino Acid Levels on the skin surface, which works directly with the active sunless ingredient, DHA, to produce maximum color results.
pH Balancing Skin Primer balances out skin surface prior to tanning to minimize orange look for that natural just off the beach™ color.
Hydrates skin for even and maximum absorption of sunless solution.
Advanced DHA Odor Encapsulation molecules ‘trap’ and virtually eliminate common sunless odor.
Time Release Micro Capsules bind moisture within the skin.
Unique Dermal Barrier locks in DHA.

Application

Even though this mitt is really big it’s soft and easy to use. I didn’t realise it comes with a lot of moisture, so much that I dripped it everywhere taking it out of the foil – oops! It moved along my limbs fine but didn’t feel very exfoliating. There was enough moisture left to be able to reuse it, so I put it into a zip lock bag for next time.

Result

My legs felt moisturised and a little smoother and the tan glided on really well. I was worried about the colour payoff because my legs were actually wet from the mitt before applying the tan. I was left with subtle, natural looking colour as if I’d been running errands, during a week of sunny weather, rather than on holiday or outside gardening all day. A huge bonus for me was that there was no freshly painted smell at all! My skin stayed moisturised, with no patchiness, colour change or spray tan scent and those really are the most important things for me. Low maintenance and a believable result.

LUSH Plum Snow Bubble Bar – Christmas collection

23517457_10155803046772487_6435694245437297920_n (1)

Plum Snow (£5.95) is a weighty Bubble Bar which you can easily use in two goes if you wish. I’ve never thought of combining plum and mandarin together before but the sharp sweetness works really well. It has a very strong scent so it might be worth using it fairly quickly, unless you want your whole bathroom to smell like a LUSH shop!

It turns the water a beautiful dark purple colour with lots of bubbles and leaves skin feeling soft and hydrated.

This really did make my bath feel like a luxurious treat.

Zerreau Waterless Shampoo Foam

22729211_10155750161777487_3966389955093478822_n

I thought I would give Zerreau Waterless Shampoo Foam a try because washing my long, crazy-thick hair (even with a pull down seat in the shower) can be very fatiguing for me.

I used this when my roots where getting a little oily but the rest of my hair was ok. The foam is really easy to use and has a beautiful scent of coconut, which lasts for hours. It dried quicker than I expected and made my hair appear clean and shiny.

I say ‘appear’ because around four hours later my roots looked the wrong kind of shiny and split into oily strands again, rather than looking smooth and clean.

Conclusion

The equivalent of Febreeze for hair.

It really does depend on why you are using this. If you are a gym bunny or commute to work amidst traffic fumes or work in a strong smelling environment this ‘shampoo’ might be really useful to you. If your hair is very dry and frizzy between washes I recommend a nourishing oil (Zerreau do a shampoo for ‘textured’ hair but I don’t hold out much hope for it’s effectiveness) and if your roots are greasy I recommend Batiste dry shampoo.

Cute Sparkly Mani

DIkFGkbWsAEomH4

I felt like getting my Barbie on today so I chose Wendy – a warm coral pink by Zoya and added lots of sparkle. What I noticed about this colour is that it turns a sexy tropical orangey-pink under low electric lighting at night – how appropriate!

I’ve had lovely rounded nails all summer but they got too long and broke so I’ve filed them into a squoval shape, which is also quite flattering and practical.

I find applying Barry M Iron Mani as a base coat and then two thin layers of polish (with or without added sparkle) and then another coat of Iron Mani makes my DIY mani last for around five days, not bad.

Weleda, Calendula Shampoo and Bodywash

19092695_10155338466627487_3567742341829796202_o

My frizzy hair does not react well to any kind of chemicals. I dye it though which means my haircare has to be really gentle and natural in comparison, which this Weleda Shampoo and Bodywash is.

  • No synthetic preservatives
  • No fragrances
  • No colourants
  • No mineral oils

It’s active ingredients are Almond Oil and organic Calendula, which made my hair soft, clean and manageable. I really like how creamy it is because it’s easier to massage into my hair without using too much product or having to dilute it. It’s so creamy I actually re-read the bottle, wondering if I had bought conditioner by mistake!

I must add that after using this there was no noticeable fade to my turquoise streaks which made me very happy.

Soap & Glory 5-in-1 Magnetizing Micellar Make Up Remover & The Rushower Dry Shampoo review

soap and glory

Soap & Glory 5-in-1 Magnetizing Micellar Make Up Remover

I use this when I have a face full of makeup and it is incredibly good at removing it. I use this some evenings to balance my skin when my T-zone is too oily and/or needs some gentle exfoliation. I wouldn’t recommend using this every single evening unless you apply a night moisturiser straight afterward as I woke up with very dry skin when I skipped the moisturiser before bed.

The Rushower Dry Shampoo

The Bergamot and Rose sent is pretty and fresh. The spray is very fine so it’s easy to use without ending up looking like it’s snowed. I found that I had to use a little more than my favourite dry shampoo to absorb oil but it was easy to style afterward and looked healthy and shiny. Unfortunately, the effect only lasted a day and my hair looked greasy and flat again. After I’ve used this up I’ll go back to using Batiste, which last for two days and smells wonderfully tropical.
