Arbonne, Calm Range Review

I’ve only recently discovered Arbonne, traditionally a skincare company developed in Switzerland in 1975 and I’m impressed with the purity of their products and the ethically sourced botanicals they contain. Their products – now ranging from skincare and makeup to nutrition – are vegetarian, free from animal products or by-products, artificial flavours, artificial sweeteners, benzene, formaldehyde donating preservatives, mineral oil, parabens, petrolatum, phthalates, sodium laureth sulfates (SLES), sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), synthetic dyes and talc and gluten.

I have mild heyfever so my skin gets irritated easily in spring and summer, so I need lighter, gentler products making the Calm range perfect for me.

Soothing Facial Serum

• Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) soothes Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) soothes and moisturises
• Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) helps soothe skin
• Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) softens and soothes skin
• Mallow (Malva sylvestris), rich in vitamins, softens and soothes
• Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) contains antioxidant properties
• Sea mayweed (Matricaria maritima) calms skin
• Japanese green tea (Camellia oleifera) helps soothe skin

It’s been so humid lately I’ve not needed to use any moisturiser (my skin sucks up the moisture out of the air so well) but my skin did need soothing and balancing, which is exactly what this serum achieved and without any oil slicks around my T-zone in the evening. I’m going to carry on using my usual serum for Autumn and Winter as it contains vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid and retinol (which I know some people can be sensitive to so it’s understandable this wouldn’t be a suitable ingredient for the Arbonne Calm range).

Gentle Daily Cleanser

• Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) soothes and moisturises
• Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) helps soothe skin
• Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) softens and soothes skin
• Mallow (Malva sylvestris), rich in vitamins, softens and soothes
• Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) contains antioxidant properties
• Sea mayweed (Matricaria maritima) calms skin
• Japanese green tea (Camellia oleifera) helps soothe skin

I think I’ve worn makeup twice this whole summer but when I did, it was a full face. This gentle cleanser removed all of my makeup (although I wasn’t wearing water proof mascara) and left my skin feeling clean, refreshed and nourished.

Soothing Eye Gel

• Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) soothes and moisturises
• Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) helps soothe skin
• Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) softens and soothes skin
• Mallow (Malva sylvestris) rich in vitamins, softens and soothes
• Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) contains antioxidant properties
• Sea mayweed (Matricaria maritima) calms skin
• Japanese green tea (Camellia oleifera) helps soothe skin

I have to confess that I’ve been upping my salt and water intake to help me cool down in the heat and my gosh has it made a difference to my giant puffy eye bags! After using this gel (which I keep in the fridge and apply by gentle taping with my ring finger) my bags weren’t visible AT ALL. Can’t get any better than that!

Gentle Daily Moisturiser

After some gentle exfoliating with a fruit peel my face needed some moisturiser but I was dreading the feel of it on my skin and wondering if it would be too heavy. My skin absorbed this moisturiser immediately and any redness from exfoliating had subsided within five minutes. I also used some on my hands which were rather dry as it was to hand (please excuse the pun) and it worked really well. I would recommend this as a basic moisturiser to everyone, no matter what their skin type.

Weleda Skin Food Review

I’ve recently discovered the natural beauty and health brand Weleda and find their principals and methods to be very admiral.

Weleda’s Ethics…

‘While we are making our products, we actively protect ecology and support Weleda Skin Foodenvironmental stewardship and conservation. Where we cannot obtain raw materials from our own Weleda gardens or certified wild collection, we obtain the ingredients we work with from selected suppliers, very often people we have been working with for many years. Our constant investment in research and development helps cultivate beauty around the world and we build positive relationships within our own team, with our customers and with fair trade partners.’

Nature, health, beauty and you…

‘All of our product ranges have a key ingredient we call the ‘leadplants’. Each of these leadplants has characteristics corresponding with different phases in the life story of our customers. Our leadplants are selected to have a particular effect on, and a relationship with, people as they pass through different stages in life. They are selected to maintain the balance of body and mind and for each individual’s well-being. From our body and face care for people at every age and life-stage, to our specialist pregnancy, baby or dental care, Weleda offers the right natural care product for every need.’

Skin Food Review…

Skin Food (£6.95 30ml) is the thickest cream I have ever used, it doesn’t sink in quickly because it isn’t meant to. It moisturises, repairs and protects dry damaged skin. The bloke had an old blister from a burn which had turned into a small seg (those hard bits of skin that come about through wear and tear or pressure) so he naturally became my test subject. He applied the cream in the morning and again at night and by the next day it felt as soft as the rest of his skin and had a smoother appearance. I’m going to use this to moisturise my hands and feet every night before bed as I think Skin Food will be their saviour – it really is a hero product!

I would love to hear from anyone who’s tried Weleda before to see which products you recommend.

Your Tea – Tea Face Healing Hydrating Tea Scrub

Jarbox

Your Tea is a company which sells all kinds of tea, tea accessories and tea based beauty gifts. Tea Face Healing and Hydrating scrub ($24.95) is said to assist with a radiant complexion, healing scars, addressing uneven skin tone and drawing out impurities. It contains all natural ingredients including Rosehip Oil, Patchouli Oil, Jojoba Oil, Ylang Ylang, Cold Presed Coconut Oil.

Flanneljarbox

I thought this scrub would be messier to use than it actually was but the tea granules stuck together quite well as I scrubbed my skin in circular motions. I leaned back to chill out for 15 minutes to let the oils soak in before removing with a damp flannel and rinsing my face with tepid water. I was impressed with how effective the exfoliation of this scrub was as it left my skin feeling really smooth. It also looking radiant and a lot calmer than before. Some scrubs leave my skin a little red or flushed but Tea Face actually calmed down the redness that I had across my nose and cheeks.

Jar

I decided not to use any moisturiser straight afterward as I loved my skin the way it was! I really like the packaging as it’s easily recyclable and I’m going to re-use the glass jar as I think it’s lovely. It’s important to keep the scrub in the fridge once it’s opened, which keeps it fresh and really adds to how refreshing it feels.

The Vegan Kind (quarterly) Beauty Box

The Vegan Kind Beauty Box

I’ve subscribed to The Vegan Kind beauty box (£15 + £3.50 p&p) because it’s quarterly. That’s just enough time for me to use the products and not have then mount up, making every available space look like a beauty apothecary counter. Not that that’s entirely a bad thing.

The vegan Kind Beauty Box products

I really like that the box comes with an information sheet which describes each product in detail, and three codes for money off, encouraging you to buy from those very ethical brands in the future.

Twa Birds Woodland Rose Epsom Salts Bath Soak (RRP £2.00)

This has such a beautiful, comforting yet uplifting rose scent and the petals look really pretty in the water. My aching joints and back really appreciated this addition to my bath.

PHB Anti-aging Eye Gel, Argan & Rock Rose (RRP 16.95) handmade with 15% of profits going to charity

With active ingredients of Argan oil, seaweed, Rock rose, Lavender, this eye gel this eye gel is incredibly effective. I’ve been keeping it in the fridge for extra cooling and apply it every morning as soon as I get up. After an hour my bags are looking a lot less apparent and have decreased by around a third of there original size.

Fairypants Lemon Drizzle Lip Scrub (RRP £3.99)

This is delicious…I mean rather effective! Because I cheat and eat food I’m intolerant to once (twice) a week my lips freak out and get really dry and rough. This scrub helps to refine the texture of them and leaves them feeling moisturised for around three hours after, no mean feet, believe me. Oh and the little pot is utterly adorable!

Grounded Coconut and Lime Hair Mask (RRP £12.50)

This smells like the fruitiest cocktail you have ever ordered. Due to my sensory issues I somehow miss-judged the feel of how oily this mask is and put way too much of it all over my hair. I had to shampoo twice to get it out and my hair went greasy again the next day. However, a little bit used on mid lengths or ends will be incredibly effective and it will last much longer than I first thought. I’m so glad I’ve found this product!

Alva Natural Cosmetics Green Equinox Sparkling Harmony Mineral Powder (RRP £7.50)

Overall this looks gold to me. Different shades of gold in different lights, sometimes with a pale green tinge but I wouldn’t describe it as completely green. It glides on easily, is blendable, and highly pigmented although it doesn’t show up when confronted with a very bright camera flash but thats expected with most mineral make up.

______________________

All of these products add up to £42.94 so getting this box at £18.50 (including p&p) rather than buying them individually is a huge saving of £24.44! All of the products here would suit a wide range of people as non are specifically aimed at a certain skin or hair type and the eyeshadow is universally flattering for all skin tones. This is another thing I really love about this subscription box.

20p from each box goes to Dr Hadwen Trust, the UK’s leading non-animal medical research charity who fund and promote the development of techniques to replace the use of animals in biomedical research.

This box was a back issue from Summer but you can buy the new 2017 Vegan Kind Beauty Box here.

This Works, In Transit Camera Close Up

image

In Transit Camera Close-up is a very versatile product as it can be used as a mask, moisturiser and primer. I use it mainly for the latter two reasons as it’s incredibly moisturising and subtlety bounces light of the face so imperfections (uneven skin texture in my case) are blurred and skin appears smoother. To test this I looked in four mirrors around my house in natural daylight, trying to see imperfections and it was only in the most harshly lit mirror that I could actually see any!

My skin combination skin was actually paper dry when I first applied this but then stayed moisturised and balanced throughout the day.

This Works products are free from –

  • Phthalates
  • Sulphates
  • Synthetic Colours
  • Synthetic Fragrance
  • Parabens
  • GMOS
  • Mineral Oils
  • Petrolatium
  • Propylene Glycol

I deliberately applied my foundation with my fingers and it glided on without me needing to use as much and looked perfect for around eight hours, with one minimal touch up after that.

The organic pharmacy review

Hand Cream – Marigold and Comfrey

This has a beautiful fresh flowery scent and sinks in quickly. I wouldn’t say it’s as protective as a hand balm (if you are going to be gardening etc) but it’s perfect those of us who hate that greasy feeling other hand creams leave behind. It left my hands feeling moisturised for around 12 hours.

Antioxidant Lip Balm

Every now and then I come across a lip balm or lipstick which immediately gives me a sore throat. I’ve never been able to find a common factor in the ingredients to be able to figure out why. I’m going to be using this as a foot balm from now on as my feet are very dry and this balm is already making a positive difference to them.

Face Cream – Double Rose Rejuvenating

This cream also sinks in quickly and has a very light formulation which gently moisturises skin without making it greasy a few hours later. After using this for a week my skin was left naturally moisturised and looked a little more radiant This is the perfect ‘every day’ moisturiser for me.

Mama Nature Natural Rejuvenating Skin Peel

Mama Nature are a wonderful cruelty free company who are ethical in their approach to the environment, their skincare products and their employees. Mama Nature is vegan, paraben free, handmade to order and uses recycled material for their packaging

They say…

‘We want to continue making a real difference and our philosophy is simple – to improve the quality of life of our customers through our natural products and not harm our environment or other animals while we do so.’

‘All members of our team are treated with the utmost respect and we support their work-life balance.’

Mama Nature natural skin peel

Mama Nature natural skin peel

Unfortunately due to my wonky health conditions, I lost concentration for a split second and my hand relaxed so I dropped the jar, spreading 80% of the contents on the floor – whaaaa! Luckily a little goes a long way and I still have at least a few months worth of treatments left in the pot.

Ingredients

Aqua, Organic Whole Leaf Aloe Vera, AHA Natural Fruit Extract (extracts of bilberry, sugar cane, sugar maple, orange and lemon) Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Organic Lemon Oil.

Usage and packaging

Gentle peeling and smoothing with soothing elements. Promotes new skin growth. Helps products to sink deeper into the skins surface. This peel has the consistency of a runny gel and has a pleasant fruity scent. I like the packaging because of it’s simplicity yet it’s immediately obvious what the product is.

Result

I left this on my face for two hours as instructed and there was no tightness or tingling. I wiped it off in circular motions with a damp flannel. I was thrilled with the results! My skin felt completely smooth and looked more radiant and even in colour. My moisturiser sunk in immediately and my combination skin remained balanced for hours afterward. I have a tiny bump of scar tissue on the top of my nose which is darker than the rest of my skin, which has now been lightened and flattened so much by Mama Nature’s Skin Peel it’s now barley noticeable!

Brandname Skincare Essentials from Unicorn, Chorlton

I had a wander down to Unicorn vegan shop on Albany Road in Chorlton to stock up on food and beauty goodies.

Yaoh Organic Hemp Seed Oil Lipbalm in Mango £2.05P1060341

The only lipbalm that has been able to heal my lips after them pealing due to me eating wheat and dairy or getting chapped in winter. This stuff is fantastic! I also like that it’s in a stick as I don’t think it’s very hygienic dipping germy fingers into a pot when you are and about. The balm smells amazing but has no flavour, which is good otherwise I’d want to eat it!

Ingredients: Virgin olive oil, candelilla wax, organic hemp seed oil, comfrey, calendula, St. John’s wort, tocopherol (natural vitamin e), rosemary extract.

Faith in Nature Hemp Handmade Soap £1.95

A wonderfully gentle soap, with a very mild smell which foams up but is non drying. A bathroom and kitchen staple.

Ingredients: Sodium palmate, Sodium cocoate, Aqua, Glycerin, Cannabis sativa seed oil, Camellia sinensis leaf extract, Zingiber officinale root oil, Cymbopogon citratus leaf oil, Citrus paradisi peel oil, Sodium chloride, Sodium citrate, Limonene, Citral, Geraniol, Linalool

Salt Of The Earth Natural Deodorant £3.36

This is one of those things I use everyday and don’t plan on changing because it’s so simple and effective.

Ingredients: Potassium Alum

Faith in Nature Replenishing Moisturising Cream £6.39 (unfortunately I could only find the Intensive Moisturising Cream on Faith in Nature’s website)

I was looking for something to replace my old face cream from The Body Shop (a brand P1000252who’s profits go to it’s parent company L’Oreal), something that was cheaper, totally ethical and easily absorbed. This moisturiser ticks all of the boxes and is perfect for my combination skin, lightly hydrating it before it can become dry, therefor producing too much sebum. I think the packaging is very innovative for a skincare brand as the inner base is spring loaded to make sure there is ZERO WASTE OF THE PRODUCT.

Ingredients: Aqua, Caprylic/capric tryglyceride*, Aloe barbadensis leaf juice**, Glycerin*, Glycine soja oil**, cetearyl wheat straw glycosides~~, Glyceryl stearate*, cetearyl alcohol*, limnanthesalba seed oil*, butyrospermum parkii butter***, camelia sinensis leaf extract**, sodium PCA*, tocopherol*, parfum*, stearic acid*, citric acid*, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, xantham gum*, limonene~, linalool~.

*Vegetable derived **Organic certified ***Ethically traded ~From essential oils ~~Wheat straw sugar derived , gluten and protein free.

Ooh Arr Face Masks

Yes this brand is literally pronounced “Oooh – arrgh” which I like a lot. I was thinking that they had gone all Warhol with the packaging and used interpretive colours…I was wrong, the masks are really that bright!

P1060292

I found it strange at first to apply a face pack to damp skin and I thought I’d end up with sludgy mud but after applying nearly the whole pack and waiting a little while it dried to a mask. These are one of the few face masks I’ve used that haven’t made my face feel uncomfortably tight as they dried.

Dead Sea Cooler Deep Cleansing Face Mask

Active Ingredients:

‘Clay – helps to detoxify skin and draw out impurities. Glycerin – has great moisturising and hydrating properties. Witch Hazel extract – a great anti-inflammatory and astringent to help tighten skin. Sweet Almond – rich in Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and E. Full of monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids – to help condition skin and promote a youthful, healthy complexion. Bamboo powder – rich in minerals and acts as a gentle exfoliant in this refreshing face mask. Argan Oil – intensely moisturising, a great antioxidant and contains Vitamin A and E which can help protect skin. Tea Tree Oil – a natural anti-septic, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory – making it an excellent natural treatment for acne. Peppermint Oil – cools and soothes the skin, helping achieve a bright, clear complexion. Dead Sea Salts – help to detoxify, soften and moisturise skin.’

Looking like a villain from Batman

Looking like a villain from Batman

I used this on a day when my complexion was starting to break out slightly due to too much dairy and needed a really deep calming cleanse. When Ooh-arr say this is cooling they really do mean it. It was the kind of cooling that’s so tingly it feels almost hot like those extra strong mints! After rinsing off I found my skin to be calm and moisturised. What amazed me was that my face was remotely red, which I expected it to be after all of the tingling and rinsing. The next day my breakout was reduced by around 50%.

Star Glow Skin Polisher Face Mask

Active Ingredients:

‘Clay – helps to detoxify the skin and draw out impurities.
Glycerin – has great moisturising and hydrating properties. Sweet Almond – rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and E. Full of monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acids – to help condition skin and promote a youthful, health complexion.
Shea Butter – a classic moisturiser. Reduces inflammation and helps soften and smooth skin. Argan Oil – intensely moisturising and a great antioxidant. Contacts vitamin A and E to help protect skin. Jojoba – helps to balance skin’s natural sebum production, reducing the appearance of breakouts. Coconut oil – very beneficial moisturiser. Softens skin and reduces signs of ageing. Vitamin E helps skin to regenerate. Honey – packed full of antioxidants to slow down ageing. Antibacterial properties help treat spots and blemishes. Aloe Vera – soothes and moisturises skin, helping prevent acne breakouts. Vanilla Extract – a great source of B vitamins to promote healthy skin.
Sunflower Oil – high in vitamin E. Helps lock in moisture and keep skin feeling soft.’

After letting the mask set for 15 minutes I slowly rinsed it off with warm water in gentle circular motion to exfoliate my face – especially my T-zone. Even though the particles were very fine they were incredibly effective and my complexion felt smooth and incredibly moisturised, again without any irritation or redness.

Rosie Glow Deep Cleansing Face Mask

Active Ingredients:

‘Natural Clay – helps to detoxify and draw out impurities within the skin. Montmorillonite – acts as a toner for the skin, helping to tighten pores and revitalise your complexion. Glycerin – has great moisturising and hydrating properties. Bentonite Clay – draws out impurities, helping unclog pores and absorb excess oil, clearing congested skin and can help to tighten fine lines and wrinkles. Sweet Almond – rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and E. Full of monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids – to help condition skin and promote a youthful, healthy complexion. Shea Butter – moisturises, reduces inflammation and helps skin to appear smoother and softer. Argan Oil – intensely moisturising, a great antioxidant and contains vitamin A and E, which can help protect skin. Geranium essential oil – helps balance the oil production of skin and helps keep it supple. Marula Oil – contains antioxidants which help protect skin from environmental damage. Sunflower Oil – high in vitamin E to help lock in moisture and keep skin feeling soft. Palmarosa Essential oil – great rejuvenating and regenerating properties – promote healthy cell growth and help repair damaged skin caused by ageing. Rose Essential Oil – can moisturise and hydrate skin and help with inflammation as well as redness. Rosehip Oil – high in vitamin C and has great rejuvenating and regenerating properties.’

I used this mask on my cheeks 3 times in 18 days and it gave my complexion a real boost. My skin felt incredibly soft and looked rather radiant, which is saying a lot in March with all of the wind and rain and lack of sunshine.

ERiiS SPF 15, UVA, UVB, Infra Red Triple Sun Protection Milk

When you think of Winter skincare do you immediately think of thick pore clogging creams?  My combination skin has never gotten along with heavy moisturisers  and it’s amazing how many of these don’t contain an SPF of any kind. Anyone who wants to prevent skin ageing knows that they must protect their skin from the suns harmful rays all year round, no matter how weak those rays may appear.
