My Lifestyle Lately – May 2017

Obviously as I’m Mancunian there has been one big event for me which has separated May from any month surrounding it. The terrorist attack. I have so many things to say about this, how upset and angry I am, the social and religious politics, the possible ramifications and what actions could be taken now, but I’m emotionally exhausted by it so I won’t. What I will say is that the resilient and empathetic spirit of my fellow Mancs and the support from people around the world has been amazing. I’m actually writing this to the sound of The Courteeners concert drifting over from Old Trafford Cricket ground and they are doing a cover of Oasis’s Don’t Look Back In Anger, with all of crowd singing their hearts out. Aw shit, I’m filling up now. I really do love Manchester.

Food & Drink

Screen Shot 2017-05-27 at 19.40.41

Have you been drinking lots of water but still feel more thirsty, brain foggy or fatigued because of the heat? I’d give this a go. It tastes like blue ice pops (you can get other flavours like strawberry and tropical) and because of the aloe (i.e electrolyte) content, it hydrates better because our bodies use it more efficiently, rather than just rushing it through our system like it would with water.

Screen Shot 2017-05-27 at 19.41.45

As the weather has been so warm I’ve only been able to manage very light meals. I’ve discovered that Original Sheese spread can be broken up and used as a creamy feta cheese alternative.

Screen Shot 2017-05-27 at 19.42.52

I’m starting to see why people mistake me for a vegan but it’s actually my wonky body that can’t cope with dairy and egg white for gastro and auto-imune reasons. I miss having omelettes though so I was pleased to come across this. If you use it with a small amount of say, mushrooms and are sparing with the cooking oil and leave it alone to cook, rather than harassing it with the spatula, this comes out brilliantly! Unfortunately I was too hungry to take a photo of my perfect first time attempt. Then I fracked it up something terrible the second time – doh!

At the begging of the month it was my birthday so me and the bloke hopped on a bus and then a tram and went to our fave Indian restaurant of all time, Lilly’s in Ashton-Under-Lyne. You can read my review of Lilly’s here. We also got a lot of takeaway which lasted us for around three days!

Screen Shot 2017-05-27 at 19.50.58

I’ve been making cold mocha’s every evening so there is one waiting for me as soon as I get up. I actually take it back to bed with me. 1 heaped tspn dark cocoa powder (mixed with a little cold water), 1 heaped tspn instant coffee, 2 rounded tspn sugar, 1 tspn vanilla essence, a little hot water to mix, fill up beaker with unsweetened almond milk. Chill.

I compiled a dairy and gluten free shopping list and reviewed each item to make it easier for people who are feeling a bit overwhelmed with this kind of dietary transition.

I put this Romwe wish list together right at the start of the month and managed to resist buying anything for myself. op

Screen Shot 2017-05-27 at 19.47.08

It’s funny that in the same month that I’ve stopped approaching any brands, two brands have asked me to collaborate with them on Outfit Of The Day outfit reviews. However, the items (around six of them) are taking ages to arrive so those will be live on the blog next month. I’ve also ordered stuff from EMP, yet again and opted for everything to arrive together but apparently it’s not all available (even though they weren’t ‘Out of Stock’) so that hasn’t arrived either. Only just realised last week that my fave jumper works really well with my fave skirt, both of which I’ve had for ages, ha!

Even though I don’t rent a place I can call my own, I still love compiling homeware posts every now and then like this In The Tropics one.

Screen Shot 2017-05-11 at 17.20.54

I made a Stylish and Sensible Summer Shoes post because I like alteration and not falling over when I walk in summer.

Screen Shot 2017-05-27 at 19.41.21

No, not me going for a job as a waitress at a sports bar but me melting in this fracking horrendous heat. My feet still get cold in the evening though due to circulation issues, hence the Uggs. I actually love this basic look but haven’t been brave (crazy?) enough to leave the house in it yet. I’m managing to keep weight on these days but my muscles tone is disappearing fast so I’m getting a cross trainer for less fatigued days (I’m being very optimistic here) as it will give me a whole body work out but the machine gathers it’s own momentum quickly so you can put as much or as little effort into it as you want.

Screen Shot 2017-05-13 at 17.52.10

I’m a firm believer in wearing what you want no matter what size or firmness you are so I gathered together the 15 best shorts. There is a style here to suit everyone. I’ve bought the denim scalloped hem one’s from H&M and wear them with very sheer black tights and they look great! I keep meaning to get some black fishnet tights to wear with them and with my ripped jeans for a grungy feel (like I used to in the 90’s) but I keep forgetting.

Screen Shot 2017-05-14 at 16.22.38

I would stagger around blindly in summer if it weren’t for my sunglasses. Some of these are off-the-shelf but some are designer so they should be widely available in options if you need prescription lenses like I do. I suggest getting polarised lenses to decrease glare if you are light sensitive.

Random Stuff

Screen Shot 2017-05-27 at 20.04.28

As a fellow geek I decided to join in with the The Geeky Girl Tag after I enjoyed reading other bloggers answers.

IMG_7505

I wrote this post as I wish my parents would have come across something like this when I was a kid as they and they and my paediatrician and my teachers where clueless as to why I was struggling so much and therefor how they could help me to help myself. Actually my Paediatrician barley noticed. *giant face palm* As a child I was very aware that I was different. Things didn’t come easily to me, yet the other kids magically seemed to instantly know what to do and how to do it, without constant mishaps. As a teen I realised I had a rather different thought processes going compared to my mates as well a lot of the time. Like what is the point of over analysing the way that cute guy said “Hi” to you for hours. Just be glad he said it and maybe even have an actual conversation next time. Reading something like this would have made me feel a lot less like an alien from another planet.

funko

I made a Funko Pop! of myself, which I’m pleased with.

May has been Ehlers Danlos Syndrome awareness day, which is so important as it’s one of the most misunderstood and miss represented genetic disorders out there. I’ve been given a verbal diagnosis of EDS but several Rheumatologists are still refusing to put it in writing on my medical records. Preferring instead to say instead “Christine is having it that she has EDS” er, I’m ‘having it’ because I was TOLD that I have it FFS!?!? It’s important to mention that all of this stubborn ignorance and arrogance from specialists (and I do use that term lightly) makes dealing with EDS so much worse as it’s a constant battle with people who’s actual job it is to know better. It really does make us emotionally exhausted and just adds to all the other shit we have to deal with. I’m so lucky to have received support from an amazing online community of fellow zebra’s here, otherwise I would have been questioning my own sanity.

I reviewed e.l.f. Studio Tone Correcting Powder and Studio Flawless Foundation and was impressed with both products. In fact their foundation was the best I have ever used!

I arranged my lipsticks in colour order and had a general makeup clear out. I just kept on buying the same 3-4 shades of lippy over and over again, having forgotten that I already own them. I’ve thrown out any shade that needs mixing with another to create the colour I bought it for in the first place and any lipsticks which are either too drying or slide off after ten minutes. Same with foundations as I don’t have the time, storage space or patience to have to mix several together to get the right colour or consistency. No more making-do with crappy makeup.

I reviewed Soap & Glory Perfect Ten Shadow Palette but wasn’t that impressed with it for some unexpected reasons.

Well that was quite a catch up! Let me know if there was anything you found interesting.

It’s My 3rd Blogversary! Thank You ^_^

screen-shot-2016-10-06-at-16-47-30

An absolutely mahoosive thank you to everyone who has been with me since the start or found this blog a while ago or have just discovered it. Your comments and likes have spurred me on to keep blogging and have been the highlight of my day when I’ve been having a bad one. Your support and enthusiasm has made me feel like I’m actually good at something when Dyspraxia has made me feel otherwise. You have made me laugh (with you, not at you), you’ve been as excited about geeky things, urban things and cruelty free things as I have and really made me think about life with your observations and advice. You are all awesome!

It is so strange to think that three years I finally took peoples advice and started a little unassuming blog. A blog which turned into something that a lot of lovely strangers actually started to follow and commented on and then some of my fave brands which I’ve used for years started to gift me their products to review and invites started arriving for blogger events, meals and cocktails!

The most surprising thing however, is that I’ve actually kept this up for three years and yes, people leave but new people follow every week. When ever I’ve felt bored because of illness or Winter weather or I’ve felt lonely, this has been a little sanctuary that I can visit, with a cuppa and snuggly wrap around cardigan, which always makes me smile.

To anyone who’s followed this blog for a long time, I appreciate you putting up with the early days of back-to-front structured sentences (thats how my thoughts sound in my head) and under or over exposed photo’s. I never realised that as a blogger I would become a copy writer, an editor, a photographer of all sorts of subjects, a photographic editor, a creator of layouts and an organised (gasp!) person capable of meeting deadlines, tagging and scheduling blog posts and the owner of several busy and successful social media accounts. Phew!

To anyone reading this who isn’t a blogger, why ever not? Give it a go, what have you got to loose? Even if you only get a small amount of followers, you will still have a creative journal of your life and maybe learn some new skills along the way.

Now give me some cake!

Genuine thanks from the bottom of my heart

Chrissie

Awesome Geek Questions and Bucket List Game

I saw these questions on Scruffy Little Nerd Herder’s post when she accepted the Leibster Award off Epicfied and was nominating people for it herself. She didn’t nominate me (don’t feel bad for me I got one a few years ago) but I loved Emma’s questions so much I’ve decide to join in and answer them because they’re awesome basically.

1. What are your top 5 favourite fandoms?

The Flash, Harry Potter, Firefly, The Big Bang Theory, Buffy. These are fandoms which will last/have lasted for decades because the material is so wonderful it stays in everyone’s hearts and minds.

big-bang-theory-title-cast

2. What would your Patronus be?

A house cat. I do get likened to a cat quite often because I love sleeping but being awake at night. I love warm spots and will actually move away from the people I’m sitting with if it means I can sit in a patch of sunlight. I’m very silent when I move and often make people jump. I have good hearing for high ranging sounds so can hear things that other people miss – too sensitive car alarms are evil!

3. What’s your favourite Pokemon?

The one that looks a bit like a fiery sort of fox??? That one’s cute.

4. Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter?

Autumn as the leaves on the trees and covering the ground are such beautiful colours. Summer is too hot for me and my puffy ankles and Winter is far too cold so mild Autumn weather with a little bit of sun and a light breeze is heavenly.

autumn leaves new_0

5. Star Wars or Star Trek?

I was convinced I’d be a Star Wars fan and thought Trekies were dorks until I watched Star Wars and just could not get into it. I then watched the two modern Star Trek films with the fantastic Zachary Quinto as Spock and thought they were fantastic!

6. Who is your favourite superhero?

I love and hate this questions – it’s so difficult! I think I’ll have to say Jessica Jones as she’s reluctant, grumpy and an alcoholic so she’s far from perfect but still manages to get the job done with finesse and dry humour. Plus she is far more relatable than someone who’s all preachy and boring.

th

7. If you were a superhero, what power would you have?

The power to end excessive greed and oppressive rules/laws in the name of religion.

8. How do you like your eggs?

I love dippy eggs with buttered toasty soldiers, even at my age! I smashed my egg cup when drunk so now I’m improvising with a large shot glass – rather ironic.

9. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

To Finland to see the Northern Lights and go husky sledging and snow boarding and skidoo riding and and a spar to ease all of my aches and bruises!

Screen Shot 2016-03-13 at 01.31.12

10. Where’s your favourite place in the world?

This is going to sound incredibly soppy and possibly barf inducing but it’s snuggled up next to the bloke. Wouldn’t matter if a scary natural disaster happened or if we were stuck on an island as long he was next to me I’d feel safe. Bleurgh!

11. Who is your geek icon?

When I first read this question I took it literally and immediately thought about my troll doll who I gave a cyber punk makeover. Now I realise they are meant to be real? Has to be Darwin for me!

5 Fandom Friday – Fave Fictional Foods

5fandomfriday

5 Fandom Friday – Fave Fictional Foods

Maybe I’m not a big enough geek or maybe it’s my bad memory but this is going to take some research! I’ll start with the obvious and progress to the more obscure.

Honeydukes in HarryPotter

Anything really, especially the Pepper Imps ‘breathe fire for your friends’, better make sure you tie your hair back though!

Screen Shot 2016-03-02 at 20.03.36

Tacos in Deadpool

I know, I know tacos aren’t fictional but the account of him liking them is. I’d love to share a taco with him, mainly because I think he’s awesome, not because I like those awkward little things that break up the second you bite them.

Screen Shot 2016-03-02 at 20.42.11

Ambrosia

The food of the Greek and Roman Gods is a kind of sweet nectar poured over fruit which sounds wonderful and also gives you immortality by the way. Although on second thoughts maybe this wouldn’t be the best of ideas, I mean you’d get sort of lonely after a century or just plain bored….

Screen Shot 2016-03-02 at 20.20.33

Three Course Meal Sweets in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

You know those days when you feel really bloated from the night before but you’re still hungry? ;o)

Screen Shot 2016-03-02 at 20.28.04

Sharing a curry with Lister from Red Dwarf

He’s pretty fit, he’s lazy, he appreciates a hot curry and quite a few beers. Who better to spend an evening with when you just want to Netflicks and chill – or whatever their version of that is.

Did I miss any obvious one’s out and do you think I cheated a tad? Hehee!

5 Fandom Friday – Things In My Bag At All Times

5fandomfridayI’m one of those wenches that has a Mary Poppins bag – the kind that seemingly contains everything you could possibly need. I’m pretty sure McGiver could make some incredibly cool escape device out of it’s contents. I don’t have the memory for taking things in and out of it or swapping bags much so I stick with this owl satchel most of the time (which also seems to go with everything).

 The Trusty Owl Satchel

P1060266

Where ever you are in the room it looks like they are looking at you.

Teeny Tiny Torch

P1060257

The bloke randomly bought me this and it’s surprisingly light weight and bright, plus it has a great battery life.

Mathew Williamson Purse

P1060259

This folds out to fit a massive amount of club cards and notes and change are easily accessible and countable. It’s feminine but not kitschy and I’ve never found a purse that is so dyspraxia friendly before or since.

Two Pens

P1060254

One that’s great for fidgeting around with when I’m bored/waiting for something and a magic one with ink you can erase. I found the latter at a bus stop but don’t worry I sprayed it with Detox!

Lip Gunk

P1060265

Moisturising lipstick (Neil’s Yard) a balm (Sleek) and a gloss (Neil’s Yard) because my pout dries out so quickly so these are utterly invaluable! My lips are naturally really pale compared with my medium/yellow skin tone and because I don’t want to look like I’ve aimed for a tacky 80’s make up look these are all in warm colours.

Two Notebooks

P1060260

A tiny one for important stuff and a big one for general ideas. The tiny one is from The Great Orme in Wales and the other has a cover made from recycled car tyres.

5 Characters I’d Like To Get Drunk With For National Drink Wine Day

5fandomfriday

Yes, it’s another one of those National days but it’s also every geeks fave day of the week: Fandom Friday! This weeks theme is ‘Favourite Cupcakes’ er…..? So I’m doing a bit of a theme mash-up and substituting cupcakes for wine instead lol

Olivia Pope – Scandal

Screen Shot 2016-02-19 at 14.00.05

I’m not going to lie, the only thing we would be talking about is men, or rather a very particular handsome and powerful man, whilst drinking from one of her giant wine glasses.

Samantha Jones – Sex and The City

Screen Shot 2016-02-19 at 14.02.26

After re-watching a few episodes of this a while back and realising how whinny and self absorbed Carry really was, I appreciated Samantha and Miranda’s characters even more. I’m sure I’d get a lot of REAL advice on men and relationships from them, rather than clunky similes and platitudes. We’d have to have a wine based cocktail of course so Bellini’s maybe.

Tyrion Lannister – Game of Thrones

Screen Shot 2016-02-19 at 14.07.57

Now this dude can drink! I’m pretty sure he’d be scrapping me off the floor at 1.00am on his way to the cellar for more wine. I’d love to have a right gossipy bitching session about his horrible family, although Jamie Lannister does have a lot of redeeming qualities, I’d have to agree with him on that.

Patsy – Absolutely Fabulous

Screen Shot 2016-02-19 at 14.11.25

I can’t even imagine what outrageousness you would get up to going on a night out with Patsy! Nothing would be out of bounds, crazy wise really. You know when you have taken time over your appearance and you go out looking perfect only to be terrified by the reflection of your drunken self in a bathroom mirror a few hours later? Patsy would be the best person to understand this after a few bottles of Bollie, or vodka, or really anything sweetie.

Marge Simpson – The Simpsons

Screen Shot 2016-02-19 at 14.21.43

In the few episodes that Marge has gotten drunk accidentally on purpose she has been a lot of fun singing and dancing, tactlessly honest and a bit of a light weight. OMG my wine drinking personality is Marge Simpson!

____________________________

Penny from The Bang Theory is someone who I thought I’d like to share a bottle of wine and have a giggle with but then I realised I’m just to geeky these days to get along with her. I really would want to slap her after she’d screwed up her face or rolled her eyes at my geek references for the 20th time. That’s just plain ignorant Penny!

Who would be your favourite TV character to share a bottle or two with?

5 Fandom Friday – Fictional Vehicles I’d Love To Travel In

5fandomfriday

Ok I know I’m late on this one. I must set a reminder in my calendar!

The Batmobile

It has to be this model of batmobile because I love how sleek it looks when it’s totally armoured. Plus I imaging it would feel snuggly and seriously bad ass to drive!

iu

The Airship from The Golden Compass

I’ve always wanted to ride in a hot air balloon but not really liked the idea that you are just relying on the wind for direction. This airship is wonderfully high-tech and it ticks my steampunk box as well.

iu

The Black Pearl from The Pirates of the Caribbean

Since I went on a school trip to visit the galleon The Golden Hind in junior school, I’ve always wanted to sale on  giant ship. I also don’t get sea sick and the motion of a ship actually makes me sleepy. You can tell I’ve not travelled over giant waves yet, can’t you.

The Dolorean from Back to the Future

Who wouldn’t want to have a time travelling car with seriously cool gull wing doors. Why not pick the tardis? Well entering and leaving it would be kinda conspicuous, plus I’m going to get a spaceship in a minute anyways.

iu

Serenity from Firefly

Well I had to have a spaceship in here somewhere didn’t I lol I know she was very temperamental but I love how chunky and rounded the ship looks. I also really miss the TV show so I’ve picked Serenity for sentimental reasons.

iu

It’s never tool late, what fantasy ride would you choose?

Monthly Round Up – January

It has felt to me that January has been in two parts: The first where I was still in a slight Sailor Jerries and chocolate reindeer induced haze and the other where I was constantly taking pictures of gorgeous items then writing posts about them on my new laptop (I’m old skool – I don’t do tablets). I’ve already developed a little callous from clicking my track pad constantly. This obviously means I’m a proper writer now, right?

typing

I’ve been watching… Gotham as you know I like quirky geek and goth things. So far the series has subtly introduced three well known characters but don’t expect a new character with an origin story true to the comics each week. Gotham is choosing to go it’s own way in that respect. I love that Sean Pertwee (Worzel Gummidge’s son) is playing a rather bad-ass version of Alfred the butler!

I’ve been listening to… Northern lad Ash Hunter’s debut album Rural Music and even though shoe gazey folk isn’t really my bag, I really the track Grand England it has that ol’ magic of making you feel nostalgic for a place you’ve never been.

I’ve been sniffing… Lola a perfume by Signature fragrances that is sexy, fruity and sweet thanks to these notes:

Top: African Orange Flower

Heart: Jasmine, Patchouli

Base: Cedar, Rose, White Honey

This is my personality in a scent basically! I can’t wait to buy one of their beautiful full sized cut glass bottles. The Bloke has also been on their site and is looking at buying a sample (for £4.95) of something he fancies.

I’ve been writing…For a new website aimed at female bloggers called The Click. This month I’ve written the feature ‘5 Unusual Sources Of Inspiration’ for anyone who’s got bloggers blog or who wants to vary their articles a little. I think I will be playing ‘the album game’ soon myself. I’m looking forward to writing next months article, the content of which I will keep as a surprise.

I’ve been blogging about…

Films

Sci Fi Flicks To Watch Out For in 2015

Teen Films Worth Watching As A Grownup

Beauty

Zuzka Natural Rosa Canina Body Butter

Style

OOTD: Pretty Casual (get the pun there?)

Home – Not So Neutrals showing how a neutral palette can be interesting.

I’ve also wrote two summing up posts (one for 2014 and one for why I actually like Winter) which I’m not going to link to on this summing up post, otherwise it might interrupt the time space continuum and generate a black hole in the blogging world, or something.
