Home Comforts for the Season (and accidental gluten)

Hello everyone! I think I may have consumed some gluten as I look cheeky but rather puffy – doh!

I’m so happy the evenings have gotten cooler in Manchester, Uk but I was only dressed all snuggly for about an hour because we had the back door open as someone was cooking (tiny kitchen, no extraction fan).

It’s that time of year where I get a bit obsessed with cozy cushions. Both sofas and my bed are full, so now I’ve filed an entire chair with them so there’s no room for an actual person!

Floor cushions are a thing right?! ☺️

Don’t you love how old furniture in a house evolves?

[Using my skeleton towel as a tablecloth for the spooky season]

Originally a pine antique dressing table, then a house-phone stand to which I added an owl lamp and a giant ceramic mushroom, and now people use this when making important (mobile) phone calls and taking notes, or as a calm space to sit next to when reading a book to rest their cuppa tea and snacks on 🤗

I’d love to know how your home is slowly evolving to suit you?

A Wonderful 2021 Diary by Pepper and Cute

This Pepper and Cute 2021 diary (£19.95) is a diary, organiser, planner and journal. With extra pages for TV, book and music lists, motivational illustrations, a zip-lock keepsake pocket, pretty post-it notes and stickers it’s a fun combination!

There are four different covers so I chose this one as it seems rather apt for someone living with disabilities and chronic illness like myself. I’m just that much of a diamond!

The lettering is rose gold, violet, sparkly rose gold or rainbow sparkly depending on how you tilt it. How clever is that!

Some of the Fun Bits

CUTE LITTLE DETACHABLE BOOKMARK

My only complaint is that, even though this diary comes with several sheets per theme, you can’t buy extra refills so you have to be selective/frugal with how you use some parts of it.

This would make such a lovely, thoughtful present for someone. I’ve not been as excited to start a diary since my Smash Hits Magazine one which I got for ‘Crimbo’ as a teen in the 90’s, hehee!

Life Lately – June

June has flown by, which is weird considering I’ve been out of the house a whole…one time! I’ve been very grateful for the, frankly shite, weather Manchester has had this month, as it’s been a well needed break from the crazy heatwave of May.

Pride Month

My love and respect goes out to the LGBTQ community as always, whatever your sexuality and however you identify. I’ve always been proud that I live in a city with year-round acceptance (in a general sense) and awareness. I think this is thanks to the The Gay Village, plus a great Pride Parade and festival.

Food

Been switching all month between having cups of tea with sausage and mash to having a cold beers and mezze.

Independent Artist or Business

GDBEE Art is by Geneva who makes the most gorgeous graphic art of women of colour. She’s also created the webtoon Hovergirls, about two alien fighting cousins who work in a coffee shop by day. The entire Hovergirls series is available to read on phone/device or PC.

Lifestyle

I’ve changed my bedroom from being the place where stuff gets dumped, into a place where I actually want to spend time. a) I’ve had a big clean and tidy b) I’ve brought in more storage c) Updated a dark toned LOTR poster to a lighter toned and very neat dragon canvas d) I’ve reduced the amount of Funko Pops and books/papers piled everywhere.

Reading

The Getaway Girls by Dee McDonald is roadtrip comedy about three rather different friends, all past middle age, who decide they are unhappy with their lot and want to start a new adventure through France and Italy. I’ll review it once I’ve finished reading. I’m a third of the way in and enjoying it!

New Fringe

I was sick of my giant wavy fringe which needed cutting constantly and was way too hot and wide. I watched Birds of Prey (which I loved, but thought the bad guy was just plain annoying) and cut myself a new punky, shorter fringe. Freshly cut it looks a little too perfect but it does naturally have a lot of movement and looks spikey if I apply styling putty.

Here is me as a kid in the 80’s with a very different kind of fringe lol

I hope you’ve all been finding things to make you happy, in these turbulent times!

Assembling a Dragon Canvas from Photowall.

When Photowall got in touch asking me if I’d like to review their service I was intrigued. Photowall specialise in posters, canvas prints and more surprisingly, detailed wallpaper designs. As I have so much furniture against the walls of my room I chose a canvas print.

Choosing the Size and Subject

This is a print of Hobsyllwin painted by Ciruelo. I wanted the subject of my canvas to be a peaceful looking dragon with neutral blue and golden tones to match the rest of the decor of my room so this one was perfect! It was easy to browse on the site by looking under different categories or using the search box. You can also upload your own image, such as a photograph.

Once I’d  chosen the subject, I choose the dimensions on a sliding scale (so no working out numbers) and then I saw what it would cost, had I not been gifted this.

Packaging and Postage

The print arrived within two days! I’ve never had anything arrive that fast. It was environmentally packaged in a thick cardboard box, padded with brown paper. It included the canvas, four sides of a frame and fixtures and fittings.

Rather than assembling the frame and stretching the canvas over it like I’m used to, this came with very sticky tape along the edge of the very sturdy frames. You place the edge of the frame planks onto the edge of canvas and then fold them in, to create the frame shape.

This is me practicing before peeling the backing off the tape. Sadly, even though I’d stuck three sides perfectly to the edge of the canvas, the top frame didnt have room to fold over into place. It just sat awkwardly on top of the sides frames at the corners. I had to move it back a little to fit it into place but that meant it was overhanging the canvas slightly. I wished I had a bit of canvas space to spare. The print is going to hang high up so it will be too high to notice it doesn’t reach the edge, very fortunately!

Screwing the frame together was incredibly easy and I did it by hand. I’ve not hung it up as it’s too big for me to manage on my own.

I’d have much preferred it to have been professionally mounted for the price, if I’d have bought it but overall I’m really pleased with my dragon. He’s going to hang high-up at the side of the chimney breast (if he’ll fit), facing the door so he’ll be the first thing you see on entering the room.

If you are interested in getting 25% off a poster, wall paper or a canvas you can use vampituppw2020 at the checkout. Hurry though as offer ends 6/6/2020.

Old English Company – Quirky Stationary, Homeware and Gifts

I’m one of those people that loves to be surrounded by nice things. No item is just a note pad or a coaster or a cup, everything I own has been chosen for it’s function but also it’s form. Old English Company is a brand that excels in the design of these types of items, quirky, yet relatable, pretty but practical. Here are my top picks.

This coaster captures my early morning thoughts exactly and sits on my blokes bed side table as a not so subtle hint! I really like that the daily planner has a to-do list on one side and a dairy/journal page on the other. I wish all diaries and planners had space for you to fill in your own dates like this one does as I think it looks awful when you miss a day or two in the pre-planned ones.

As I don’t drink much tea and didn’t grow up in a household where the kettle was always on, I often forget to ask people if they want a brew. So now this coaster can do it for me.

I was surprised to see that Old English Company also do enamel pin badges and greetings cards as well stationary and homeware. I treated myself to three badges; A cute pumpkin one for halloween as I love pretty seasonal accessories, ‘First coffee, then the world’ and a ‘Coffee first’ pin as I clearly have more coat lapels available than I do cups of coffee. I chose an Xmas card for my Dad (I like to plan ahead) and a birthday card for the Bloke.

A wise person once said ‘Why have plain stuff about the place, when you can have pretty stuff instead.’ Okay, that person was me ^_^
